Well folks I am finally home after a fantastic trip with great friends doing what we do best. Putting waterfowl on their back. And what better place to do it then around a friends place in Alberta. We put this trip together in less then 3 weeks. 3 of us that grew up back east but now live all over the Continent, (Comox, Michigan, And Alberta) were back together for 3 days and waterfowl slaying! Both me and Brian got into town late Wed. Gary met us there with a Kokanee in hand and we were off to Gary's place. On the drive he mentioned that he had at least 3 good shoots lined up, starting with tomorrow morning. There was a cut barely field holding 600 or so honkers.

So up at 4:30 we met up with a couple of his buddies and thier dog and we were off. We put out a mix of around 7 dozen full bodies, silos and shells, grassed up the blinds and we're ready for war. Heavy fog rolled in the night before and we figured the birds were gonna be late. After some excellent bsing, the first birds started to show up. We had 0 wind so the majority didn’t do it right but got within 20-30, and with the odd ass shot we had our 40 down in short order. Jason (Gary's buddy) had an absolutely amazing dog, retrieved all 40 geese. Great work. We clean the birds and after some breakfast and a quick night we hit the road, to watch our fields for the following days.

As we watched the field for the next day, there were a ton of geese and ducks gliding over the field, but seemed pretty hesitant. Made a few circles, and then landed one field over. This went on for over an hour. We weren't sure and couldn’t get a hold of the farmer if we could hunt the field with the birds in it, so we decided to stake it, and hunt the field we had. It was a swathed barely field. And if you ever hunted swaths before WOW.

The next morning with the same 5 guys and virtually the same set up with the addition of a few robo's we were off. Before legal we were getting buzzed like mad with ducks. As soon as legal hit we had our first birds on the ground. Again we had no wind, so it was tough to put them in the pocket. That coupled with some bad shooting, had us out of the field with 15 mallards, 6 pintails, and 8 honkers. Great shoot, not so great shooting. Same routine as the day before, shower, breakfast, nap, scout.

Well we put on around 250 miles that night and ended up with the same conclusion. All the birds are in the field that we staked. So we made a few phone calls and WE WERE IN.

Saturday morning was amazing. Just the three of us made it out, and we hammered 24 geese, and 19 ducks. We shot great and everything did it perfectly. We had about a 20km wind from the south sending pretty much everything right up the centre of the pocket and most that came in didn’t leave. After we limited on geese we spent the time, calling in group after group and taking video and pics. We needed 5 ducks to finish our daily limit, so we hunted at little pothole at night and got 4 mallards. 1 short of our limit for both geese and ducks. THe night ended with a perch and pickeral. This was a big eal to me as i hadn't eaten either in 9 months, and being from southwestern Ontario, it is similar to crack!

All smiles
