Sorry to hear that your hunt didn't pan out. Sounds like you still had a good time, plus any father/son time is good time.

Are you going to go back up after the snow goes away?

From what we saw, anytime now would be a good time to leave. Many of the slopes are starting to green up pretty good, and there was plenty of bear sign. We saw over 20 black bears on the side of the highway coming home, mostly around the Meziadin Junction area, as well as a sow grizzly with three cubs by Tatogga Lake. The bear we shot was down fairly low, around 2800 ft, but I suspect more of them will be up high now, as the south slopes are starting to green-up.

Whoa:eek: I didn't realize there was Part 2 to your story.

Thats awesome, great story. Glad your hunt panned out;). Can't waite to see pictures of your bear. Always nice when you have a good story to go along with the memory and shooting a bear that is charging you AND having a tag for said animal is perfect.

Again congrats to you and your dad.

I did find the bullet from my first shot. It entered the front of his chest, tore through his boiler room, went through the guts and right hind quarter, and stopped at the hide on his ass. The bullet was perfectly mushroomed and measured nearly 1'' in diameter. I weighed it earlier today and it held about 375-380 grains. My second shot went through the bottom of his chest, blew out his spine, and exited. The stopping power of the 45/70 and the big, slow moving bullets impressed the hell out of us.

A very impressive accounting of your hunt Youngfella. Charging grizzly....jeepers, just about had me unload into the shorts just reading it.

That first area that you went to, Eaglenest Valley, is the area where Tom Leonard from Quesnel disappeared in the latter part of September. Some fellows that he worked with will be going back to search for his remains later on, June perhaps. I'll pass on that you encountered quite a bit of snow. When would you think that the Eaglenest would be searchable? Actually I think Icebox Canyon is their destination as snow was waist deep when the search was conducted in Oct.

To the rest of the forum members, sorry for the hi-jack and I'm too am eagerly anticipating pics!

My load was 49 grains of ReLoder 7, Federal 210 Primer. MV is 1860 fps, and energy is around 3100 ft/lbs.

I saw the posters put up for Tom Leonard around Iskut. Very unfortunate. I think the snow is still too deep to go very far into the Eaglenest Valley. June would be the earliest, late June or July would probably be better. Hopefully they can find something that tells what happened to him. One of the bad things about going by yourself.:-(

I'm just using a Canon A310 and seems to take a beating, sometimes a little slow and not much zoom but for what I use it for it works fine. My wifes camera is a Powershot A520 and it seems like a nice camera but I haven't played with it yet.

I wanted something in expensive and tough so I could throw it in the backpack but good enough to take some decent pictures. If it breaks then I'm not out a whole bunch of money.

Pentax is making a great relatively inexpensive (range 250$ to 375$) line of waterproof point and shoot digital cameras called the Optio WP, W10 and the WPi that range from 5 to 6 megapixels with 3X optical and 4X digtal zoom that will fit in a breast pocket of your shirt. That level of picture quality (5 or 6 mpix) is more than enough for 99% of everything most of us could ever need.

You can fully dunk this sucker and take pictures underwater if you want. I have destroyed two other digital cameras due to moisture. If you spend alot of time in the bush here on the west coast or anywhere else it's just a matter of time before most digitals die due to damp conditions. This one should be one of the exceptions and will be my next purchase before the fall.

Boy, that's a pretty good sized critter Youngfella. That would be pretty hard to keep one's cool with that boy woofing along at a gallop with the sole intent of licking one's arse! For this, you deserve the Willaim Wright Award. For those who are wondering who William Wright was, he was a renowned grizzly hunter from a 100 years back. He probably was the first person to use a game trail camera. Read his book, "The Grizzly Bear", first published in 1909, it has the black and white photos that he took.
