After two weeks of hunting hard, eastkoot and I went out for our last morning of elk hunting yesterday, deciding to try an area close to camp because we were planning on packing up and heading home by noon.

At first light, eastkoot dropped a dandy dry 3 year old cow with a 200 gr Accubond with his 300 WM.

As he headed back to get the truck closer, I hiked to the top of a nearby cutblock to see if there were more elk around. Go figure, I found a twin to the one eastkoot had just dropped! A 180 gr Scirocco from my 300 WM found the target at 350 yards and then the work started!

Eastkoot was smart enough to shoot his 30 yards from the road, while mine was about a km further back in the cutblock.

Not much for pictures as I can't get cell phone ones downloaded, so here's a few I managed with the camera which I brought along on the recovery mission to get my elk back to the road.

As you all know, this is FD's preferred method of retrieving his elk  :

Special thanks to my good friends at Tembec for their strategically located skid trails, designed with hunters in mind, I'm sure!

By 1:00 pm, both cows quartered, two trucks full, and back at camp!

Fantastic job FD...finest meat there is.

So did you find the cow opening was the gong show many expected it to be, or was it reasonable hunting still without massive crowds?

So did you find the cow opening was the gong show many expected it to be, or was it reasonable hunting still without massive crowds?

Actually, it depended on the area. Some spots were high traffic, but other areas were "normal" for traffic. I wouldn't say we saw a gong show anywhere, but some roads were really busy. We camped at a less popular spot, and didn't have too many other people around - a little "local knowledge" by eastkoot goes a long way.

As usual, if you got your ass off the road, you had the bush all to yourself.

Holy crap! I just cooked up some rib-eye steaks off my cow, and it's unlike anything I've ever had before! I love hunting bull elk, and have always enjoyed eating them, but I have to say this cow is the best eating elk bar none!

I'm plannin' my elk huntin' strategy already for next year!

Took my first cow last year, and have to say the same! Love chasin' them bulls, gotta 330 mount on da wall......but that cow was excellent!
I'll do it again......well.....if it's a 350 bull.....maybe not.....

I must have missed this when I was gone.

Nothing like a double header to maximize effort. Only have to wash the truck box and clothes once!! Congrats guys.

FD, I don't have any LEH's again this year, and the gun-hunters are scaring my moose away. So maybe you could plug me a nice, fat WT doe, since your eating elk anyway. I'll come pick it up.

Ha! I never worry about bears. Did see a grizz sow with two cubs during the hunt, but they got down the bank before I could get the camera out.

I've lived through enough grizzly encounters in 33 years of elk hunting to accept them as part of the experience.

It must be normal up there, but I'm surprised the hide was still on those elk. I always skin first, then quarter and bag.

Why?Hide keeps them dirt proof till you get them to the meat pole.

This thread managed to slip by me on one of my many absences from the site lately. Congrats FD! That is some good lookin' eats.

I know some folks over at Tembec...I'll pass on your appreciation. ;) Most of them hunt too, eh.

If I knew you weren't up the Valley, I woulda dropped by for a visit. I probably wasn't too far from you for a few days during the cow season. On that topic, WOW was it quiet this year compared to previous years. Guess a lot of folks were saving their tags for the WK.

How dirt proof can they be in the back of an open truck on a dirt road. Now a clean elk bag will keep it lot cleaner and cooler to boot.
