I've always used my trusty old Mossberg .22. Recently, I picked up a 30.30/20 gauge over/under Savage. I think I'm really going to like it. That being said, the .22 provides great practice acquiring the bird through the scope and making a good shot. I will have my 11 year old daughter use it exclusively for the next few years.

I plan to use my 12ga - 2-3/4 wingmaster to do some grouse hunting this fall.

Just curious to know if people use 12ga for grouse? And what size shot is best? I'm a little concerned that I'll wreck alot of meat if I use the wrong size shot. I guess its more about shot placement than anything?

thanks

That's exactly what I have been looking for. A Savage Model 24. .22 over .410. Great little gun.

I been looking for one too. dont think savage make them any more. You can try Baikal in 410/22 but they seem pretty expensive IMO, and the 22 is probably not so accurate anyways so wont give much of a range advantage over a 410.

Im considering compromising with a 410 double.

.22 on the roads, 12ga if I'm working the bush and wing shooting. Seem to have a lot less meat damage with the shotgun unless I have a perfect head shot on the .22. Maybe its time to scope the it...

We always have our fill of grouse every day. 12 guage?? Sheeesh!!! If your that crappy a shot at least gear down to a 410.

Believe me, I know my way around a rim-fire..... But what I'm liking about the 12ga is that I don't have to worry about mud in a barrel (so much), a scope getting buggered, clips getting misplaced, or what-have-you. The ability to just throw around a POS shotty has its benefits.

For the last couple of years I've been using a single shot 20. Mostly this year I'vw been using a single shot .22 and using shorts because I'm hunting with my six month old son, bring home a lot less chickens though... But I have been known to use a bolt action 16, pump 12, single 12, bolt action .22, ruger 10/22, and 10-20 yard head shots with 30-06, 22-250 and .223. Might have to give the .375 a try this year if ones holding still and I have a good rest.

Whatevers handy, mostly I use a 12 gauge or .22. My son uses a break 12g, my wife a break 20g my daughter a .410. My go to is my old model 12 using light trap loads. I like to have a shotgun around in case I get the chance to puddle jump a duck or goose (never happens but hey ya never know). I've got a number of .22s and 12gs so its kind of a open the cabinet and say who wants to go hunting today sort of thing

I guess it depends on the style of shooting you're doing, eh? I'm usually in thicker brush and they fly pretty quickly, into the trees. No chance of hitting them with a .22.

If you're picking off the sitting ones at the roadside, a rifle can be a clean shot.

Why don't you try shooting them on the wing. Then we'll see who's the crappy shot. There are people, myself included, who like to go for a walk with a bird dog and shoot them on the wing. Try that with your 22. In our group you would get seriously laughed at to use your expression.

I usually see them when I'm out for deer so its usaually a 270 win. just have to make sure to remember to put the croos hairs just above the head when you shoot them at 20 yards. I forgot to a couple weeks ago and blew a wing and a large chunk of breast right off the bird. Still lots of good eats left though.

I've had to pass on a few though when they get in trees since a 270 goes a ways. For that reason , on the rare occasions that I go out looking for grouse specifically, I prefer my 870 12g.

I also use a 12 gauge 7.5 shot, i was going to get a .410 until i saw the price of ammo. Big7 is right, aim about 6" above the head at around 20 yards or so and you are good to go.

Also it is nice having a 12 gauge along in case you have any bear or cougar trouble. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Is that mossy oak brush that the grouse are wearing?

Thanks Matty-ola for reminding me that I "need" one of those (have the target version and gets boring shooting it, too easy).

I use my Ruger 10-.22 LR and i love it!:-D It's always accurate and I rarely miss their heads. Even if you shoot low and get them in breast, the meat is hardly damaged at all. The 10 rd. mag. gives you the opportunity to harvest multiple birds at a time. I've only been hunting a couple years and I've harvested close to 100 of those tasty little chickens. Oh ya! Don't forget to eat the hearts!:???:...jam packed full of protein and actually taste pretty good!

870 express mag , #4 shot improved cylinder. I usually pop em off the side of a ditch at about 20yrds , try and scallop them if theyre any closer. I'd like to try walking the back roads with my 18 inch maverick this year. got a scoped norinco .22 I'd like to try too .

Forget the 410 unless you ground sluice grouse. 16 gauge 1 oz load patterns the best of all. 12 and 20 work great, but just remember when a grouse flushes wild you don't get much time to shoot. Most shots are well inside 30 yds. Choose a choke that will allow for a good wide pattern and use light shot; 7's or even 8's on ruffies and a stiff load f 6's for blues or sharpies. I don't want to offend anyone but the 410 cripples more birds than any other shotgun. It's a fact. let the kids shoot the birds that are sitting still or perched up in a tree.

I Agree 100 percent. A .22 to the breast really chews up the meat. Twelve bore at proper distance with light shot is much better.

shooting a grouse on the ground is an easy way to get some camp meat. How many do you get on the flush with that old .22. Way more fun to shoot em over a good dog with a shotgun.

Who would shoot a grouse in the breast with a .22? If its not accurate enough to shoot them in the neck or head it is not much good. I use a .22 usually with c-bee low velocity for road chickens. I like my old bolt 16 guage for wingshooting grouse but have been known to use single shot .410 or 20 or bps uplands 20 or bps stalker 12 for big blues on open side hills

Bought a Yildiz 20ga o/u two years ago, don't get to use it much as everyone else likes to hunt with it,lightweight and reliable, have probably got 40-50 birds in that time, use to use 12ga pump but o/u shoots faster too.

Bought a single shot 20 guage CIL 402 from a gent off the Buy/Sell forum on this site for $100 a couple years ago. It has performed well and has already produced some great memories. A buddy of mine completed his CORE and got his hunting license in August last year, and got his first three grouse with it last year. A ruffed, followed by a spruce, and topped it off with a big blue.

Completed the Grouse Trifecta!!!!

Mostly use a Valmet 220 o/u, have used a Baikal 12ga single barrel occasionally. Also used cast bullet squibs in 7-08, 7mmrem mag, 7x57. Ex brother in law shot one on the wing once with his 300H&H, perfect breast job. Shot a few with the bow, found using cheap fixed blade broadheads seemed to result in fewer lost arrows and more chickens than Judos.

I used to run 410 all the time but when I moved to MB the grouse there are cagey and run through the brush so I switched to a Wingmaster in 12 Ga and never looked back. A pleasant surprise for me at that time was finding out that 12 GA shells are way less expensive than 410's!

Used the 22 in the past...which I also enjoyed... unfortunately I had shot some birds and I knew I had hit them but they just kept flying into the bushes where I couldn't find them. So..this May hubby bought me a 28GA over and under....it's been fun.

Just remember to always aim for the head/neck like you did with your .22. If you pull a body shot you will think the 12ga is bad. When infact you shot the bird bad. Its just like shooting a bird in the breast with a .22 hollopoint, not the guns fault you shot it bad.

Just think of all them birds on the wing you can shoot at now!
