not much of a story. been scouting and hunting the area for years now. missed a big one there last year. Drove in with my dad opening morning. barely got into the cut and there were deer running everywhere. the group this boy was in had 3 other bucks of the same caliber. this one was the heaviest, body and antlers. they took off down a revene and out of sight. then came back into sight on a ridge that was 500 yards plus away. took a look at all the bucks lined up at the top, picked this guy. held steady and hammered him. Got over the ridge he was on and he stood up 100 yards away. so i put another one in him and that was it. hes got a huge body on him. OH AND THOSE ARE 8 1/2 INCH BASES

and i can say from experience.. my dads not in the greatest shape as hes getting over open heart surgery. i had to deal with him myself.. took me 2 1/2 hours to get him 100 yards with the help of a quad.

She's great! The neigbour's malamute got her wandering a bit across the highway, but that got straightened out after she led my bro's Rotti over there into a bear trap! Are you gonna get another elkhound?

Speakin' of bones, I made the mistake of leaving a professional euro-mount elk on the garage floor... she chewed the head right up to the bases... I was p!ssed, but it was my fault...

that is one awesome buck! Gotta love the mass that one has. Did the velvet peel off easily? My bucks velvet was still on firm so I decided to try and save it. Seems to be drying well so far

winbuckhunter
09-20-2010, 11:36 PM
yeah, the velvet came off really easy. he was in full velvet, but it was really loose and slipping. so needless to say i ruined it before i even got him to the truck. left them outside in the rain and shade and they're darkening up nicely. ruined the cape to while i was at it.. drug him with the quad about 500 yards. tore the fur right off his shoulder.. so i'm looking for good mature cape.

Might be difficult to find a cape that will stretch over 8 1/2" bases:cool:....with even larger burrs.

Beauty buck!Try Dean Titanich in Black mountain for your taxidermy. His work is just as good as Harley's but considerably cheaper. He might have a cape for you as well.
