It was super cold and windy, and I only saw a few smaller bucks, I wasnt looking for glory really I just wanted some venison, so time to head to the whitetail grounds

Found a new spot, set up my tent, wanted to see how loud the bush was going to be when I hiked to just walked about 50 ft out of camp and boom, big sow and cubs standing there, so I slinked back to the truck and grabbed the short mag just in case, but she left after awhile and I got a pic

I had a question, in the high country I found quite a few rubs that looked like the one below, are these early season rubs? or are the deer rutting here? when do the deer rub mostly? in the rut or to get velvet off

They are not rutting, not even close!
Those rubs are from cleaning off the velvet, and testing the new head gear!
Kinda looks like the stokes?????

I would say those rubs are from those young bucks getting rid of the velvet . They get crazier during the rut as far a rubs and scrapes .

Could be an elk rub.

yea mark I know they are not rubbing like for rut, they all look old to me, from last year or before, I was just wondering what time of year it may of happened

right on - it will be tastey.

How fresh is the rub? was there rub material from the tree beneath it. Had it oxidized? From the pic, it may be an old rub from last year too.

I saw no fresh rubs, so that made me think they would have been made last nov in rut, but seemed weird, because at 6000-7000 feet, would the bucks be up there at that time?

also found a broken off brow tine

Congrats on the nice buck. Looks like a beautiful area to hunt. Were those grizz or blackies that you bumped into???

Good hunt. Any night out of the pack is a good night. I like the zeiss on what appears to be a tikka.
