17 Hmr

My son was looking to buy a .22 and I talked him into buying a Savage Model 93R17FV 17HMR. He wants to use it for target practice, plinking and varmits. I thought after that a .22 mag might have been a better choice. I hope I didn't steer him in the wrong direction.

Na, the 17HMR will be FANTASTIC for those kinds of uses. My new CZ/Brno varmint in 17HMR arrives in about 2 weeks. :)

Are you guys mail ordering the ammo or is there somebody locally selling the ammo?

In Nelson all I have is a WalMart and they don't have or plan on carrying 17 HMR:frown:

Do you have a Canadian Tire store there. I phoned the store in Penticton and they said they did.

McRae, phone the corporate head office in the US (or email them) and tell them that you are POed and dissappointed that you cannot get the ammo of your choice at your favorite retailer and watch to see how fast it comes in! :wink: Fred

Hmmm there is a Canadian Tire in Castlegar but I am not going to hold my breath the selection has been getting worse every year.

I was chatting with the department manager at our WalMart and he said he is having a hard time getting any ammo?

I started reloading my own a couple years ago because of this.......

I would really like to get a 17HMR for plinking just for something diffrent. My wife has pretty much taken over the .22:grin: .

Wal-Mart in Cranbrook has (or had) it, as does Mountain Man Outdoors, and (I think) Outfitter Sports does too. You can mail-order it cheaper than you can get it locally; though I think with shipping and such that it'd all work out about the same in the end.

If you go through mail order go through SIR mailorder... they have really good prices for 17 hmr shells with a reasonable shipping cost... I also recommend that if you want a good huntin shell go with the 20gr bullets...

And you did make a great choice, the 17 hmr will out shoot any 22 any day in my opinion. Get a good variable scope to go with it a nice 3x9X40mm bushnell is what I have and it works great... I took a grouse at over 100 yrds in the neck last season...

My son and I came back from shooting his 17 HMR and it is a very nice caliber and a nice gun to shoot.
