View Full Version : The Basin Bull

We dropped down into the "Basin", instantly finding fresh elk sign as we worked our way through the timber down the hill. Found a torn up spot where a bull had obviously been not too long ago, so we tried a bugle. Instant response off in the timber to our right. Another bugle a few minutes later and he screamed back, noticeably closer.

Myself and my 13 yr old cousin, on his first elk hunt, took position on top of a small rise, while the father in law and BIL took cover behind us 50 yards, and began to cow call. A bugle off to our left echoed off the poplars, and the crashing of brush coming in fast got our attention and we got ready.

I spotted the bull first about 75 yards out, he stopped and thrashed a small tree and let out a bugle. Nice bull I thought, real nice. I had my 300 Win Mag ready and Tyler was by my side with his 6mm. A couple cow calls by the crew behind us and he was on a string right for us and coming quick. Apparently the bull off to the right bugled around this time too, but was still a ways off. I guess I was too focused on the incoming bull to even notice.

Not really sure why, but I told Tyler to lift the legs on his bipod and stand beside me, as the bull closed the distance quickly with each step. He finally came into an opening between some trees at 15 yards when I told Tyler to drop the hammer. I was trying to video and keep my eye on the shooter at the same time, I remember seeing his muzzle doing figure eights and then the shot came.

The bull took off like a race horse up the hill straight away from us. No shot angle for us that would do any good, but our backup let fly into the trees as the bull streaked quartering away. I looked over at my partner and he was shaking like jello.

We found some drops of blood on the leaves and underbrush, and slowly followed it up. 80 yards later............

enjoy

Jealousy is a terrible thing---and I feel just terrible. LOL Seeing this vid, those open poplar stands, leaves on the ground, and the elk calling sure brings back memories! What a great bull. Having friends and family there--priceless. (especially when the grunt work starts) Way to go. Keep up the pic/video work too. That'll warm those winter nights.

For a guy to get a primo bull like that so early in his hunting career......

It's all downhill from here. He might as well sell his gun now...

Great vid TB, although - at the crucial moment it would help if we weren't looking at the ground! http://www.forumsextreme.com/images/sAng_stirthepot.gif

I know I know  I was holding the camera at about chest level, poiting it in the general direction of the elk, while trying to keep an eye on what my partner was doing. That's no zoom and 15 yards at the shot. Im just glad I didnt accidentally turn it off before that or drop it

That's unreal. I know how tough it can be to keep the camera rolling on the action...that's why it's nice to have a 3rd guy there strictly for video, but the 3rd guy can be a liability too, so what are you gonna do!? (It's also easier when you're 300 yards away on a goat, not 15 friggin yards on a big bull like that!!!!!) Great job. I don't think Tyler will be forgetting that for the rest of his life...and an elk addict is born.

Awesome! What a first bull for Tyler, simply awesome. I was thinking as I watched the vid about how hard it is to be so close and not focus on the shooter and animal and forget the camera and then chuckled as the camera bounced around at the shot, I really don't know how you guys do it at all.

I remember once going through the rockies and having two full curl bighorns decide to bump heads accross the road from me as I was taking pictures. I was so mesmerized by the activity I just stared in awe and forgot I even had a camera...

Well done guys!

I handloaded him 100gr Nosler Partitions. Chrony avg was just under 3100 fps. Looks like it expanded quick and did a number on the heart and lungs, no exit. Didn't see a hole in the far ribs so it was probably inside of him somewhere. The blood trail from the entrance was easily followed at a walking pace. The 260 with a 120gr TTSX should do every bit as well and more. I hope Michael gets one too! :-D

Ya know, it's funny and I'm sure there are alot of us out there with the same feeling. Once you are mid aged, taken MANY big game animals in our time, there is NOTHING better than seeing ANY hunter take their first animal. My daughter was EXACTLY the same, she now has her own collection.
The look on the young fellas face is just priceless. I give a BIG high 5 to the whole group for giving him this opportunity. He is sure to get the bug just like the rest of us have.
Congradulations on a FINE bull. You should be proud of your accomplishments. Remember the MORE gutting you do the better you'll get.
