That's right. Managed to put another notch on the old Marlin 45/70 this evening.:-D

Actually started the other day, when I was poking around up behind my house and ran into this tasty looking sausage bear. A couple hours of cat & mouse followed, and I went home with the short end of the stick as the bugger managed to stay out of shooting sight.

This evening I headed up to an old hayfield on my place and set up on a brushpile glassing the field. Glassing the area produced a few does and a couple small bucks. Pretty soon I can hear some noise off behind me, so I wait and watch.

As the sound gets closer I finally see to top of a bears back working through the brush. Getting prepared for a possible shot, I rack the lever on my Marlin and chamber a round. The bear stepped out into the field not 20 yards away from me, and I sat still watching and listening for any cubs. After a short wait, and a good look I was positive it was a boar. As I raised the rifle to line up, the bear whips his head up and gives a loud ''WOOF!!" He turns his head my way and must have caught a glimpse of movement, as he stood up and woofed a few more times, dropped back down and started popping his teeth at me.

Well he stood up one more time, and when he came to full height, the big Marlin roared and I stroked him through the neck. The 400 grain Speer plowed through his spine and he was on his back faster than an out-of-work hooker. And that was that, as they say.

I headed back home and grabbed my pack/ knife and saw. Snapped a couple quick pics (pretty poor photos but I was not too concerned about it), skinned & de-boned him, stuffed the works in my pack, and made the grueling 3/4 km trip back to my house:mrgreen:. Cleaned it up some and tossed it in the freezer for the night to cool, and will finish it off tomorrow after work.

I figure I'll get about 15 lbs of good white fat off this guy for baking with, and some more boot grease. Should be a good eater, figure 4-5 year old ~6'er. Plenty of sausage and burger, and the best part of a bear - the ribs cooked in a dutch oven.

And for the coop-dee-grass, I even had a good whisky drink to celebrate with tonight.

nice looking Bear, I like the fact that you are utilising the fat for baking, I made Deer liver, heart and Lung sausage from the deer I shot last year, it turned out excellent.

Nice. A good hunting story with all the trimmings. Stories like this is the reason I wish I lived closer to the wilderness and farther from the big city. The pictures add nicely to the story. Thanks for the tips on how to use the whole animal.

Fat for baking. Have never used that before. I guess it's like any other lard. What do you put it in?

Just render it down and skim off the 'gunk', seal it up and keep it in the fridge. Really good for pastry and can make some pretty heavy duty bread with it too.:)

Hey ‘skook’ you must be Tyler-(unless it’s your identical twin!)
http://www.garrettcartridges.com/grizzly1.asp (http://www.garrettcartridges.com/grizzly1.asp)

"This grizzly was killed in Spatsizi Plateau Wilderness Park in the Eagle Nest Mountain Range of Northern British Columbia. He squared over 8 feet and the skull measured 23 13/16'', which is very good size for an interior mountain grizzly bear. When I shot the bear, he had started a charge from about 70 yards away, and by the time I had a sight on him, he was 40 yards. The 540 Hammerhead hit him right between the front legs, and he did a complete front-wards flip after the bullet hit him. That bullet completely penetrated him lengthwise and exited. I made a follow up shot (which was unnecessary, just instinct) after he rolled which angled through the chest, took out a section of spine, and exited the top of his skull (if you look closely at the photo you can see the exit hole in his head). Very impressive bullet performance."
