Had some luck yesterday with filling the freezer. Hit the usual elk spots with no luck. No sign of elk existed in a usually active spot.
Hit a new spot that evening, and boy did it produce.
Partner wasn't able to go out for the evening hunt, so I solo'd it (which I prefer for elk anyway).
One hour into my checking out the new spot, I noticed bones scattered a few yards back in the trees. Looking a little harder produced an antler. Getting close yet, produced a nice 4x4 mulie.

After taking some photos of the mulie, I continued cow calling as I made my way up into some pretty nice elk country.
Couple hours later, I was on top of a good hill. Flat on top, open poplar stands....perfect.
Take the hat off, lean the rifle against the fence, and give a few more cow calls with the diaphram, Squeeze Me, Sleazy, and ELK INC calls.
Not 5 minutes later, I hear a twig snap, and look into the open poplar and see the hind quarters of an elk.
Couple minutes pass, and it steps forward to reveal a 5x5 bull.
The photo finishes the story.

Been nice to get out having not done an early sheep trip this year.
Bighorns in October has been weighing pretty heavy on the mind.

Good luck, and keep safe to all!

Congrats. I have heard of a few in the freezer already but all in all it sounds like a slow start this year. I do not get out for another week but then 12 days straight.

Hunting partner said he spoke to Mike just the other day, and was told a few bulls are coming in. Haven't heard of much bugling going on yet.

Nice job on the elk, its nice hunting the aspins this time of year. Those muley antlers seemed to stay in good shape. Good luck with your bighorn hunt. Two weeks before I head up for a mountain combo it is hard to wait. Seeing all these pictures sure add to the excitement.

Weather's been nice for it, few good dumps of rain, but overall the cooler temps is nice. Wet is great for stalking slowly in the bush.
Nope, only the MR hat was in on this one...lol...the Kodiak was on standby in the truck though! The Honda external frame packed it out quuite well...my back felt great! LOL!

"KB90Nice Elk Grant!

Did you bring the muley skull home?"

Nope....the horn pile at home is just sitting there...think I've brought enough home over the years. Even these elk antlers are going to a knife maker.
The mulie horns were at least a couple years old. They were cracking pretty good, totally bleached.

"leadpillproductionsi talked to guy yesterday said there starting to talk , by this weekend should be great."

I think they'll be pretty close...buddy who bowhunts just over into Alberta had a real slow last 2 weeks. Usually gauge what he and his buddy get into for action.....they had virtually none, whereas years past, they get screaming bulls right from their opener on Aug. 25.
As others have said, seems to be slow start this year.

Good job WTS; on both the elk and the nice mulie skull. I went out for 4 days with my sons. Andrei brought in a nice 6X6 bull, but in the end didn't get it... No other elk seen or heard. Going out again this weekend!

Spose he'd be in that area, 160........know where it's at out there. I'll take a tape and rough him out when back with buddy to try for elk for him.
