Well islandhunter and I just got back from our first sheep hunt. It was more or less just to get the backpack experience under the belt and kind of figure things out. I learned lots and cannot wait to plan another trip! I'd like to thank all the fellow members who helped us out, you know who you are, especially Carl and Grant.

The weather was interesting, I see why people lean towards season opener, frost, ice, snow, hail, and rain don't make for the warmest or driest conditions:-D.

We saw lots of game throughout the trip, we didn't kill anything but it was still a good time.

Here are some pictures.

We had this grizzly walk past our tent at 30 yards. We were thankful he was on the game trail on the other side of the creek.

We seen close to 20 goats, everywhere we looked we could see goats. It's too bad we were on the closed side otherwise we would have both been glad to bring one home.

During the trip we saw close to thirty sheep, including a couple of rams. One of the rams was quite close to being legal, but did not quite pass the bridge. He may have been legal by age, but counting rings was out of the questions for us due to no experience and poor spotting scopes.

It was on this hill behind me where we spotted the 2 rams. We tried pictures through the spotter but just got blurry blobs.

We also watched 5 sheep walk up and over the ridge on the right. It sure is some amazing country out there.

On the way out we tried a few casts and caught a few dollies and grayling.

One thing I heard lots of from members here was GLASS GLASS GLASS, I now know how important that is! These stone sheep are so hard to see. We spotted some ewes feeding ealry in the day, we then moved on to glass elsewhere, and then came back an hour later to watch them again. We knew there were sheep in this bowl and it still took us almost half hour to find them again!

There are sheep here.

Atta boy. We need more 20 somethings willing to pound the hills in Drinkall and Thompson guiding areas. You go boys.

Now you know why I spent years out in that country guiding. (Guess you've lost the princess status). Don't be shy about going back in where you were again. It is a good place even with the pressure. Good Luck next time.

O you have no idea. Optics are at the top of the list.......followed closely by boots, and a lighter gun. Student Budget, School can't end soon enough.

:-D

I know how ya feel. My first couple sheep hunts were done on a students budget. I was poorly equipped to say the least, but it was worth it to go.

Thanks for posting, and good luck on your future sheep efforts.

We also saw a couple caribou including this nice bull. He was just shy of being legal. If he was, he probably would have come home with us.

Great first sheep trip... and how did the water in that creek taste downstream of the Caribou ?

Good work boys. Gear comes with time, the most important thing is to be out there.

Nice griz pics, did he pay any attention to you?

The grizz left us alone, the only problem animal was a porcupine chewing the grips off my hiking poles.lol

Right on Kyle! Glad to see you boys out there. Nothing beat real trip experience. Nothing. Read for days but at the end, until you try it out, you have to Learn before you can earn. Too bad you didnt get lucky! Still, you got out there and kicked ass. Next time apply for grizz and goats in the area and then you'll be good to go. I agree on the glass though. The only thing I wanted when I got back from my sheep hunt was an awsome spotting scope. Who knows, you might have had a sheep on your back if you had one at the time. Anyways, great read and pics, still tonnes of hunting left to do before this season is over.

Uh Oh. Now you did it. That trail will be scheduled to be salted with nails and all manner of tire flattening metal.
