Beautiful country and buck!!
Obviously, the recent frosts didn't push him out of his summer haunt. How was the vegetation up there??

it was really green. Lots of snowpack still left and plenty of food for all. Never seen so many bears either.

I do have footage of the deer but its shakey because It was so cold just sitting and spotting and trying to film. I will post it when I have time to edit it. I had charged the batt on the cams before I left, but when I was up top they all seemed to go dead so I have very little footage. I had a grizzly with a cub charge me i did not have time to turn the gun cam on. Im kind of glad I didnt because I sceamed like a little school girl and I dont want to tarnish my manly image. If you click on the second photo it is actually video footage of the deer before its death.

Bump .... who is planning their 2019 opener hunt already? :)

You bet I am! I laid eyes on Big Hank last opener, a nice 4 point mulie. Unfortunately I rushed the stalk since I had to get back to work the next day. I tried sneaking up on him knowing he was bedded somewhere in this high thicket. The sound of him leaping out of his bed 10 yards away, thumping and crashing through the brush, still haunts me.
Since then I've been rereading Mike Eastman's High Country Mule Deer a bunch to be better prepared and I'm looking forward to a rematch.
The girlfriend got a Mystery Ranch Metcalf from Santa so she too is pumped for the opener.
In the meantime I've enjoyed reading all you guys' alpine mulie stories including yours TSO.

P.S. great buck Dino!

Ohh rookie mistake there. Cant be sneaking in on something if you don't know exactly where it is. Patience is key ... keep glassin until he stands up again.

Definitely a bummer you didnt have more time. I always book off more than I need because my work is OK with me showing up early If i dont end up taking all the days.

Long way to go this year .... snow, drought, wolves..... what a going to happen when everything settles by sept

Nice buckaroo Dino!
Practicing with a new compound, would be ecstatic to find any legal buck in velvet to stick for my first real archery kill!

Love the alpine bucks....

to bad its the same distance drive for me to be into caribou elk sheep and goats... I’ll have to put the alpine deer on hold for now. They taste better rutted out in November anyways right? =S

Valid point .... alpine hunts, although difficult, are very rewarding and a ton of fun ... but if I lived up north or out east, I'd probably spend most of my time hunting elk too :)

And I dont know how it is with elk, but with the rise in popularity of Instagram, YouTube, sitka & kuiu it seems everyone wants to be a "mountain athlete" these days.

There are more people hitting the back country than ever before. Either people are becoming richer or gear is becoming more affordable but it seems everyone can afford a quad and all the backpacking essentials to get deep into the back country these days.

No shortage of high end glass either. Ran into a couple of guys last year that had more in Swarovski optics than all of my gear put together on me AND back at home!

Don’t get me wrong
alpine mule deer is high on my list.

But to get a elk or caribou would supply me with enough meat for the year and then I can be choosy with my deer.

Northern Rockies is just a amazing place to be.

Lots of wannabes with money to look the part, but could they spend even 1 night alone in the mountains?

twoSevenO
01-09-2019, 02:04 PM
^ where I ran into them was well beyond the "day hunt" limit .... so yes, these guys could.

Wannabes are mostly on the roads and on HBC :D

Lol
