My Father-in-Law and I were able to plan a five day moose hunting trip in the peace region. We went to a spot I knew in Chetwynd that used to be good before the die off. I thought it may have made a come back in the three years. I was wrong , it was apperant after a day and a half of not seeing any amount of fresh sign that we should move on. So we went to one of the small cities behind Hudson Hope (July population 5 Aug population 500) . We spent a day on quads scouting for tracks and where the majority of hunters were located. We didn't see any moose that day, but found some spots to check at first light the next. The moose almost seem to be nocternal this time of year so hunting first light is important. We left the camper at day break on foot and within 5 minutes I spotted a cow at tree line she ate for a few minutes and went into the timber. I turned around and looked down the cut and spotted another moose at 400 yards. The bino's told me it was a bull , I was able to stalk to about 100 yards and take a nice young bull about 20 minutes after leaving camp.

Good eats! ... but mixed emotions about having the season end after a mere 20 minutes :-|

We went for the first five days to pink mountain and got skunked. We saw a big bull on the way into camp the day before opening season and then only saw cows!

Oh well, it was a blast and only my first ever moose hunt!

That leaves more time for elk, stones, goats, caribou and deer

Moose populations certainly don't seem to be on the rebound from what I have seen, I have been out the past two weekends and have only seen one cow. There appears to be very high wolf populations however as I have been seeing wolves every time I go out. I would guess this is what is hampering the moose recovery.

Here is my moose for the year. A nice 43" moose for the part of region 6 I got it in. 1 shot to the back of the head! There were up to 4 bulls in the cut block where I got him, however I could only see one at a time. I seen a smaller guy, then this one walked out close by and stuck his head out, so I couldn't observe any longer!

I think moose in Chetwynd/Peace area are definately on the rebound. First night out in "secret spot" last weekend, called in 3 bulls and a cow within no time.....unfortunately got a little too dark, and then it blew a gale for the next 2 and half days. But did manage to get this meat bull in Region 6 in mid-Sep. Sam him across a valley and called him in right to the trail I was standing on. Only 44" but wow, massive body compared to the Chetwynd moose!
