The last couple of weekends have just been a total blast fishing the WCVI on the banks just off of Ukee and Tofino!!!. I've been bringing friends out to give her a whirl and get into some fish.

On Saturday we headed out with my draftsman, my friend Steve, and his old timer fishing buddy. The fishing was kind of slow to start in the morning but by afternoon the action picked up considerably. Everyone had a great time and everyone caught fish.

My draftsman Randy caught his biggest fish to date and was very excited. It went 24 lbs.

Steves fishing buddy caught his second halibut ever. He sure was a neat guy and very spry for a 75 year old.

Steve had a small problem with the Cabela's quick draw rod holder........

The hinged part blew out but luckily he buried the line in the clip and we got the rod back!

Out on the banks there were so many porpoises it was just crazy. I have never seen that many at a time.

On Sunday I went out with a couple of other friends and we experienced the same senario with the slower morning etc. and the afternoon action picking up considerably. We went out to the Wreck around lunch time just to check it out and found the coho big time. Played and released quite a few wild ones and managed a few hatchery fish around 12 lbs.

We decided to head over to the SW corner and as soon as we dropped the lines it was game on (and no it was not me who rigged that rod)!!!

Most of the fish were caught on metal in the 4" green/glow (hottest), PAL P2B, and 5" watermelon variey. Depths were 47' and 61' on the riggers.

We limited out on springs. Released quite a few smaller ones. Had a great time out there on the water. Some of the springs were jumping a couple of feet out of the water which made for excellent angling.

On the way in we saw an Orca quite close to the boat between Ukee and the banks. Really impressive mammals.

Great weekend shared with friends.

have you had much luck with the halibut this year?

The beginning of the year was slow for us but we have managed to get quite a few over the season ranging from 12 - 60 lbs. The average being in the 30 lb range. Took my son and I a while to dial in a couple of spots but we have 2 now that produce quite well:wink::-D.

You got that right for sure dl. I never take it for granted. It still blows me away when heading in from the banks how big VI really is. When ever I see a whale up close I think what a priviledge it is to be out there with it. We have some of the most liberal fishing anywhere in the world period. It truly is paradise.

Well done John, glad to see your still at it...not sure if I'm going to make another fishing trip this year or not but I'm sure getting excited about hunting( this will be my first season).
I picked up one of those 250 gal. water tanks on the mainland this week so I will be bringing that up to the lot soon and maybe go out for one last fish then. I usaully try to get out for one last trip at the end of september for the big coho, but I'm kinda winding down early this year with the prospect of my first hunting season on the horizon...I even went out and bought a jeep that I've been fixing up for a hunting vehicle so I've been working on that in my spare time...just don't have fishing on my mind as much as usual right now...LOL !

Oh ya..and I love the orca pics, it's hard to get good whale pics. We got great humpback pics one time that I'll have to share with you some time...There were two of them and they just kept circling around our boat feeding and totally ignoring us it was really cool..got a bit of video them too.

I hear ya on the fishing and I have been getting excited about this hunting season too. Just wanted to get some friends into some fish while the fishing is good. I might head up for one last hurrah on the Labour Day weekend to get some ling's (haven't caught one myself all year:???::-D)!

That jeep sounds cool. Your whale experience sounds awesome and I would love to see those pic's sometime:-D.

Your post got me pumped up. I leave on Monday for 9 days fishing around Bella Coola. It's been way too long.
