I caught a glimpse of this rump. I thought it was a little suspicious. Is this a whitie? It makes sense if it's a whitie, but it doesn't make any sense at the same time because of the area I saw it.

Believe it or not, we were playing baseball at bramblewood school this spring and a whitetail ran across the field in front of us. I couldnt believe I saw a whitie in westwood plateau coquitlam but I did.

Looks like a whitie,

Looks like a Muledeer. I would think that a Blacktail is more bushy, like a Whitetail's tail?..Or maybe its a mangy Blacktail deer :?. Confused yet?.

I dont claim to be any sort of expert in animal identificaiton, so i could definately be wrong, but that looks like all the blacktails we see in our neck of the woods.

what area did you see it in?

The area where I saw it theoriotically holds whities, but the only ones I saw before were mulies. Maybe I was just being ignorant.

I suspected I saw a whitie in Pitt Meadows. But since everyone says no way, I kinda denied myself.

It saddens me that some people have hunting licenses!
That deer looks nothing like a whitey!
If the pic was taken in the lowerwasteland...its a blacky...if in the interior....its a muley....simple!

Heres a whitey! Print this pic off and take it hunting for future reference!

This thread proves my theory that mule does will die this year in the open whitetail season. Sad. Maybe it was a cow elk eh!

Aside from obvious whitey features which this has none, ifn it were a whitey it would be more alert and would be staring at you well before you saw it followed by scampering away like a little rat waving a flag as you raised your camera. Blacktail all the way.

Hell believe it or not I've never hunted whitetails. All I've seen were blacktails and mulies. I'm not going to reveal which region this is, but this deer didn't show up in traditional blacktail territories. That's why I'm confused.

While I think it looks like a blacktail, I stick to what I said before.....if in region 1,2 or north coastal areas its a blacktail.... if anywhere else, its a muley......, doesnt really matter, same tag! :-D

That's a blacktail all the way. Unfortunately, I have very few blacktail pictures, but I've got lots of mule deer and whitetails.

www.angelfire.com/bc/canuck2/mulies.html (http://www.angelfire.com/bc/canuck2/mulies.html)

While blacktails and mule deer are related - especially so for hunting purposes and use of tags - there are definite differences. I wouldn't be calling the deer in the original picture a mule deer.

Looks like a whitie,

Sorry I'm calling BS. There are no whitetails on the Westwood plateau. The fact that you said this one looks like a whitetail proves that you don't really know the difference.

I am seriously shocked at the poor identification of deer!!!

Definite Blacktail. There are no if ands or buts.

Mulies have white on their rump, whities have very long tails with a very slim white skirting around the tail, and blacktails have a black tip and no white...

That is just rump ID... ears are another indication...

Wow... all I can say

That's a blacktail. Had one in my back yard all summer. Getting plump on rose bushes and the new shoots on my apple trees. Forkhorn. Don't know if the pictures really show the tail definition since I had to reduce them to about 5 per cent of the original. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the photos. I actually have a blacktail hide sitting on my chair and have compared that with my photo. Like I said, the only reason I asked about the one in my photo is because the deer showed up in the area where you wouldn't expect to see them. I think the distribution of Columbian blacktailed deer is much wider than I thought. Even though mule and blacktail are on the same tag, I know what a mule's rump looks like. :-D People forget what self-guessing is. I think I'll spend more time in whitetail country in the futre just for the purpose of self-education.
