we use 4 different cameras depending on the type of pics we are looking for.

our top camera is a Nikon D80 - takes unbelieveable photos and can be attached to out spotting scope as well as telescope

next we have an Olympus FE - small camera but takes nice pics and light weight also has video capabilities which are not to bad quality

for video but capability of still shots we use a Sony HDD Handycam

and for detailed video footage (hands free) we use a head cam which also takes still photos and has the capability to dive 100ft in water

If ya wanna break the bank Go Nikon D 200 or so..

however for my take anywhere camera I take my Olympus stylus 500 several years old.. and takes wonderful photos, its waterproof, and I take a small "bulletproof " plastic box so the camera is there in 1 piece when I need it..Olympus puts out great photos at reasonable prices...

new water proof shock proof w90 pentax

This is a deceptively wonderful camera. I have seen some great pics out of the w90 and they can take quite a beating too.

I have a Pentax W90. I think the Canons such as irishbandit1 suggested have potentially better picture quality, wider zoom range etc., but the shockproof/waterproof feature of the W90 is a huge plus. Everything is a compromise.
