Early aug. 2010, 5:36 pm.
i'm nestled into a small rocky saddle that overlooks a high mountain basin. i've been here about 4 hours and i've taken over 100 pictures plus some video. my decision is made and i slowly reach for my rifle. i slide the 7mm into position and line up on the big ram that's bedded 122 meters away. i eaze the saftey off, exhale and squeeze.
I should about now back up and start at the beginning(now that i've got your attention).a few days earlier I met up with 2 friends of mine, cole and kevin. The 3 of us headed north to look for sheep. All of us are "well seasoned" lol, maybe a little "salt and pepper" mixed in. its my 33rd sheep season and i'm looking forward to a good trip.
"Are we there yet" I want to say as we hike up a remote mountain drainage. It's hot, about 30 celcius and there's lots of blood sucking bugs. a couple more hours and we'll set up spike camp. that evening while glassing i spot 3 rams way up there. "in the nose bleed section" cole says.
During the night we get a monsoon rain storm. I'm soooo glad i bought a new tent(that's for andy lol). In the morning we're socked in but by about 8 am the sky is clearing and all of us are spotting for sheep. we can't find my 3 rams anywhere. cole says he's heading further up the drainage to hunt and kevin is going up and over the top to look into another valley. both of them, without any discussion between us, are staying away from the basin where i spotted rams the day before. i tag along with kevin but my real goal is to gain elevation and then side hill over to where the rams where yesterday.
more to come soon.

i get to my "small rocky saddle" in the early afternoon. i know i can't hunt much further so i elect to wait here for the rest of the afternoon anyway. the first thing i do is take a couple of pics and then i range the small basin. i can see where the big ram was bedded the day before on a rocky pinacle, it's 122 meters away.http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/medium/196.jpg (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=20031&size=big&cat=recent&limit=recent)

so it's hot and i'm getting pretty comfy. i'm lying in an old sheep bed...the next thing i know i wake myself up with a snort...oops. i peak over the edge, no sheep, lucky! i eat a genisoy protein bar. its about 4 pm, i peak over the edge again. HOLY! There's a big ram RUNNING down the basin towards me. I'm trying my best to get the spotting scope on him but he's moving to fast. CHRIST it's going to run right by me without even getting a good look!!!! then he turns a bit, runs right up to that pinacle, climbs up and beds exactly where he was yesterday. And i already know thats 122 meters away!

give the guy a break - no wonder nobody posts pics and stories on here. We should be grateful that he's even posting this up for us. If you don't want to wait check back tomorrow; it might all be up.

From the other posts I gather he's on dial up - relax and have a beer. It's Friday.

mwj

i get the spotting scope focused on the ram. we're going to call this ram lefty because his left horn is broomed. i can see that lefty is a good ram, he's heavy and has a fairly open curl. lefty is below me and at that angle i can't get a "view squarely from the side". wait a minute i think, there were 3 rams yesterday. where are the other 2 ? i spot them on the skyline. stubby and butthead i'm calling them. stubby has deformed horns and butthead is , well i think it's self explanitory.

Did you try aging this ram from one of those photos while looking at home waiting for a better view? Curious what you figured his age was at this point.

River Boater - what do ya figure for age?

mwj
08-13-2010, 06:12 PM
here's butthead coming up to challenge lefty.
BCRiverBoater lefty was 8 i was uncomfortable shooting him on age alone, besides i was having an incredable experiance.

Well I am not the best at aging so I was going to say maybe 7 but if counting first ring as 2 then would be 8 I guess. I am still working on aging from weird angles etc and from distances. I am hoping I do not need to count on it as I am not 100% comfortable. :-|

here's where things get dicey. buttheads now officially a pain in the ass. he has come across the basin and "spots" me. there's only 20 yds between us. he starts an alarm snort, kind of a cross between a "snort" and a "baa".http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/medium/2271.jpg (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=20042&size=big&cat=500)

Mid 150's. Also, theres a slick way to age sheep that takes that "uncomfortable" feeling out of the whole deal. Heres a hint, you only need to count to 6.

Great thread, great pics, good effort, and awesome ram!

It is so easy to get embroiled in the distressing stories of confrontation re resource use and abuse that our elected representitives and our employed enforcers seem unable to resolve in a timely manner... and then Sitkaspruce goes fishing and brings us with him as does MWJ who has shared an absolutely SUPER Story of a Stone's Sheep hunt....eehawww ! That's what we should all be so lucky to experience, and tell the world about ! Well done MWJ.

mountaintop,
camers is noyhing special, olympus sp-510uz. it helps when your really close lol. some of the pics were taken through the spotting scope which can take a little practice.
for the guys who guessed on score we came to 162 2/8. it was a bit higher than that when i scored my ram but you shouldn't be allowed to score your own trophy lol. the right horn which is in most of the pics is 39x14.5.

wayne,
i was a little worried before the hunt. i pulled a muscle in my calf in the middle of july, pushed it too hard on the first day of training lol. so i went into the hunt without any exercise at all. i guess i've got a few good years left in me lol.

Well my hat goes off to you Mark you must of made up for not exercising by eating right months before your hunt and working hard around your home ,I would say not bad for an old fart ..

Could someone show me how to age a ram like that?? It's obviously a full-curl, but I only cound 7 years....don't be too hard on me, I'm still learning.

sako_300

use the search function for 'sheep aging' and other related sheep threads.

There is no way to show you definitively how to age a ram. Some guys have developed tricks which work a majority of the time but you still need to be confident before pulling the trigger. That confidence comes from experience.

Simple answer to the above is you're not counting the lamb tip.

Four years of sheep hunting and I'm still learning.
