Here's two good informative sites that will help tell you a bit about pretty much any breed.

http://www.iams.com/iams/breed-information.jsp

Here's info specific to beagles....

we had a beagle for 13yrs, it was hell. get an Airedale you can train them to anything from hunt to protection and they don't shed so you can keep them inside with you.

I personally would never own a beagle but thats just me. I couldn't handle that stress.

Ummmm.... I don't know about the Beagle info on the Iams site listed above but the duck toller info is extremely inaccurate.

Better bet is to go to either the CKC or AKC sites and then the parent club of that breed for specific breed information

Good points too. There's a bunch of info on the net and not all of it will be accurate. I went to a bunch of sites before settling on our lab.

You should ask your cousin, maybe go take a look at the parents, or spend a day with a beagle. They are very nose driven and will follow it into all kinds of trouble. Too haywire for me

I have one thats 11 months now, she is quite the trouble maker sometimes. Thats her in my avatar. She has tons of energy and loves to run, great for long hikes. She is great when she has lots of exercise and tired though, haha.

From what i understand of Beagles they follow their nose not their owner.Good news is if you have a large property you may never find it.If you are looking for a hunting dog there are far better choices i would think.

Ditto to Buck's comments. I haven't owned one but everyone I've spoken to finds them to be very independant and have a propensity to wandering.
Doesn't sound like a very trainable breed to me not to mention that they aren't generally considered to be traditional hunting dog.
