Just out of curiousity, how far (or close) are most of your shots taken at animals? (and I'm talking rifle hunting) I don't think I've ever taken a medium range 100-150 yard shot at anything. Most of mine seem to be either really close ( under 40 yds), or really far (250 +).:-D

10 to 100 yrds tops. anything beyond on the island is either not visable or not there

I'd say for me its been kinda even across the board from about 20 to 300, but if its weighted to any one side, i'd have to guess between 100 and 150 would be the average.

My average would have to be somewhere around 100 yards.
4 moose - 1 at 70, 2 at 100 and one at 250
1 wolf - 50
2 grizz - 1 at 30 the other at 160
15 to 20 deer - usually around 100
1 turkey - 7

most short, under 100. One long - 250 on a big ole moose.

I've never pulled the trigger on an animal more than 50 yards away from me. Most are inside of 30. I should have been a bowhunter.... :)

My closest is just over 100yds the max being a little over 250. All but one from a stump or other such structure. It's getting so I'd be affraid of a free hand shot over 50 yds!!!

I've only shot 2 deer, first buck was 25 yards, and my 2nd was maybe, thats a big MAYBE 50 yards, up hill. Not to bad, dont like long shots!

Average around 23-25. But then again, I usually bow hunt. But even with my rifle most of my animals were less than 60-70 yards. Longest shot was a hair over 300 on a mulie buck, its the only shot I've taken over 80 yards(except on coyotes).

I've taken two shots that were over 300 yrds. The rest have been 10 to 150 yrds.

It depends on peoples skill level too. I have friends that have missed uphill shots of 80-90 yards, and others who can easily make a 300yard shot. Some guys want to get closer ( for many reasons.. being sure of what they see is one of them), but more often than not it is so they feel confident they can effectively and humainely drop the animal. Some guys will hesitate to shoot 250+ if they havent seen many deer.. dont wanna miss and lose a great opportunity.
Know what I mean? There is nothing wrong with getting a little closer, and after all, you can either boast about your long range shooting skills or how great of a stalker you are. Win, Win.

With a bow, 15 yds.
With a rifle, 50 yards. I have shot some closer and some further away but I can count on my one hand the amount I have shot over 100yds.

I have shot quite a few at or near 300 yds.but I would say that most of my shots are under 100 yds.

longest shot moose, just over 550 yards....closest moose around 60 yards...
longest shot deer (vanc Island) just under 500 yards....shortest 50 yards...
longest grouse, around 100 yards....we had filled our moose tags and had our equal to a turkey shoot, who could take the head off a grouse at the farthest distance....fun times:wink:

Out of the moose I've shot most were from 20 yds. to 50 yds. Only one taken at a longer range of 260 yds.

Bow maximum 30 yards but rather coloser if possible. Average 15 to 20 yards.

With firearms I like them close too, I would say average maybe 80 to 100 yards. It's a habit I gotten used to from hunting in the hard woods of Midwestern America and suburban places. A friend of mien who hunts antelope in open prairies of New Mexico takes avearge shots of 300 yards and he is very good at it. Me I couldn't hit a barndoor at 200 because I never practised that distance. I guess in the future I have to learn that to hunt in this province. :)

avg. shot seems to be 50-100 yards, closest 10 ft. on a buck, farthest 460 yards on a moose!

todbartell

closest - 8 yards on black bear (7mm Rem Mag 160 gr. Fail Safe)

farthest - 260 yards on mule deer (260 Rem 140 gr. Sierra BTSP)

average probably around 80-120 yards

BTW I dont consider a 300 yard shot to be 'far' or 'long'

Depends more on the species.
Whitetails 30-80yds
Mulies 30-180yds
Moose(1)120 yds
Bears 80-250yds
Caribou 70-110yds
Goat(1)100yds
Sheep(211,225,319yds)

All I can say is whities seem to be the shortest shots and sheep are the longest shots. Everything else is in between.

I much prefer shots to be up close and personal. Limits errors and only ever had 1 animal not drop on the spot (still found him though). So 99.9 percent 25 to 50 yds. Have only ever taken 1 long shot at an animal. 250yds uphill at a 3x4 mulie who was standin around with his head in the trees so had to wait until hubby confirmed antlers. But he was sure big bodied. Anyhow, nailed him through and through in the lungs. Husband was very pleased with my shot as he couldn't even take a shot as backup for me as he previously tagged out.

Island elk - 325 yds
northern moose longest 375 shortest 10 yds.
everything else around 100 yds.

Depends on where and what.

Everywhere from about 5 yards (give or take a shoe length) to 440 being the longest

Average is under 50.

Depends on the where, when and why.

I think I'm in the same boat as you Youngfella. All either really close or over 250. My furthest was on a 400lb. black bear at about 325yds. One shot from a Sako .308 with a Winchester Ballistic Silvertip before he travelled 5 yds. and expired. On the other hand my closest shot was about 45 yards on a huge whitetail. I made the shot but he still travelled about 150 yds. even though I hit him right in the wheelhouse.

like gg says , depends where annd what critter. island blacktail shots usually less than 50 yards, i hunt mostly alder bottoms, pretty thick stuff. mainland deer and moose etc can be in close or out quite aways ,simply cause you can see farther. some guys can shoot the long shots say over 250 ,i don,t spend the time on the range to be shooting real far out ., and if hes out past three hundredd chances are you haven,t been busted and can get closer.

Average about 80 yds. Longest 180, shortest, was well real close.

A few 20-50yrds shots but my average is about 200yrd. I have hunted some very large and open slashes

Most of my shots are no more than 150 yds....A couple of the moose I've taken have been around 250-300 yds according to the rangefinder, but those are rare exceptions....I have remarkable luck calling the Bulls in...
My wife keeps saying I should just sleep out in a clearcut and my snoring will bring them in,,,,women......

Most moose under a 100, I wont shoot over 300. Deer here on the coast usually around a 100, unless you are sitting at a slash with good vis.

All my deer have been close 15-75 yards tops. Usually around 40ish.

Shortest about 15yds on a 7 1/2 cougar ( a story in it self)
Longest about 500yds on a 42" moose
But for the most part probably around 150yds
