I was talking to my brother inlaw that spent the last weekend in the mountains fishing near where the coquihalla toll booth use to be. He said that each morning and evening he could hear elk bugling. He did not just hear the 1 , he could hear a response coming from up a mountain .It was daily happening and the response was also happening from different directions each time. Is this possible. He is not a story teller

Yep, a buddy watched and listened to an elk bugling on a slide a couple springs ago, while looking for a grizzly bear.

it's true, it's their way off communicating in the herd just like we talk everyday.

Thats all I need to hear is a bugle to lose sleep for the next month!

One of the sweetest sounds on earth!

I don't think there are elk up by the toll booths. It'd be the first Ive ever heard of it, and Im not too far away.

There are Elk up that way, I've seen em North of the booth, on the East side of the Hwy. A buddy said he saw one near upper Larson creek.
Years ago I read a old paperback of hunting stories, the author told the story of bagging an Elk in the area just South of the booth.

there does not necessarily have to be any elk in an area for people to hear them bugling,,

there does not necessarily have to be elk present in a certain area for people to see them neither,,,

we ran into a couple nice 6x's last week up the top end of bear creek in Trail while quading. Didn't hear any bugling though. Sure would have been nice to hear them bugle.

I used to hunt elk in the Coldwater and Tulemeen drainages in the early 1980's, a three point or better GOS about 2 months long,

most years between 2 or 3 of us we would get a couple of bulls, mostly late Sept,,,

Earliest I have heard elk bugle was august 16th in 94/95 Hudson Hope country. Guys didn't believe me thought I was sniffing gas next day we ran into 5 cows:wink:

3yrs ago they were bugling a few days before Sept 1 and were answering calls but not coming in,that was up in the Sikianni country. And man were they up high right on top with the goats.

I can verify that. ;) Just go home from a short scouting trip.

This morning I was waken up by elk bugling at 5:30. At first I thought I was dreaming. The first bugle came from across the river. Then a response came from the mountain right behind me. That was totally unexpected in that area. But then I found a pile of scat which proved I wasn't wrong. Unreal.

I had to bust a trail with my machete to follow the scats. To the very end I found a lot of prints.

I thought it was moose scat in the beginning. Yes it was old, but the prints were quite new. And they were up high...

I have seen moose in the alpine up the coq. They travel up high. thats how they get from drainage to drainage. Just like all the other animals you will see sign of them around the alpine ponds
