When hunting bucks, what kind of criteria does your buck have to measure up to before you pull the trigger??

Do you just hunt for meat? Or do you let smaller ones go in hopes for the big one? Do you always let the little ones go so that they can grow up into a big one?

Totally depends on how full the freezer is, or how hard I feel like working that day. :)

Last few seasons I have been very impatient. Shot most deer on the first few days of the trip. This year my goal is to get something a bit bigger then the last 2 years because I know there are bigger bucks in the area I hunt.

I picked any buck. Only because this year I will be trying with a bow. Rifle hunt, it would have to be bigger than the one on the wall.

I said 4-5 point but really look to see if it a good mature buck. Big body, a good size track, maybe some narly stuff on him. I like them outside their ears, past their nose, mass as big as their eyeballs, and tine length at least 5" or better. I love big brow tine bucks and really like 4x4's.

I try and hold out for whiteys and end up shooting a decent one each year but as the season nears its end I get a little more trigger happy. Muleys on the other hand I will hold out for a hog and don't mind eating tag soup...If I have to ;)

I would love a huge mulie tied to my hood for the ride home but when I see that cute little 2 point all I see is peperoni and steaks so I can't help myself.

Bagging decent meat early in the season lets me relax and do more small game hunting later. Grouse, rabbits, coyotes and maybe someday a wolf are fun to hunt, but don't give many meals per.

My criteria for this year will be to find a bigger buck than last year!

I'll come with you and shoot one of the "Dinks" you pass up on!!!!

I voted for only the biggest as it's been 4 yrs since I shot a mulie and have past up quite a few 4x4 dinks looking for a trophy for the wall. Though my biggest probably won't measure up to a Dana trophy though hopefully when the time comes will be a plus 180.

Whitetails, so far I have been upgrading in the size class every year but when it comes down to it last day any buck will do. Though this year my tags belong to my son:-D

This year i'll be looking for a big mature mulie buck, nothing less than a 4 point. I dont really care what it scores, i've seen some huge bucks that wouldnt score very well. a character buck with some sticker points would be nice. as for a white tail, since i've never shot one, i'll be happy with any buck.

I'm going to be hunting with my bow on some prime land this year so I'll hold out for a big buck. Still have lots of meat in my freezer.

Jel .. yah I wanna shot ..

Region 3 near some alfalfa fields. The deer love to hang around in the fields and if they ever go anywhere they just go uphill from there.:-D I'm to lazy to drag em so I just pluck em off the road:)

This will be my first hunting season. Although any buck would do; I am going to say "meat buck" for me the younger the better as long as it is within the rules.

lookin for my biggest buck to date...hoping for 160+

for me have to say 4-5 point....i have taken alot of deer over the years and there so easy to come by..why shoot small ones...i have managed to take several in the 180-close to 200 class now, and pass up at least 30 bucks each year that are fork horned or small 3 etc..for me I look for extra junk.. (got lucky in last yr with a big 4x4 with 7 extra points on him..its the one in my avatar or in the pics in my gallery.)or a big 4x4 frame...
BUT having said all that when i started hunting as a kid 25yrs ago i would take anything with antlers!! now i seem to have more patience and like getting out hiking looking for the bigger bucks...to each his own.

There's a wall hanger I've got a plan for this year, but normally it's meat first and foremost.

I go to another region and shoot the first legal buck I see. Usually Oct. 1 I take my dad out and we try and hammer a few fat 2 points the first few days. This year will also try and cull some of whitetail does in region 8 also.

Once the freezer has some meat in it, I hold my region 3 tag for a big one.

It's all about the action and who I'm with at the time, in what place, snow or other? Has this guy got it, to work together, and connect on Mr. Big?
Or a loner, scared, unsure and stays put, static. Out of it?
Jel .. Can you drop a buck? A 160 typical? Over the hill and far away? Led Zep pill on .. can u get back?

Rather let the smaller ones get bigger for the freezer. Not picky if it's a 4 point. Will shoot 3's if the body size is good. Make it woth the effort. Letem grow.
