Don't know where I should put this so decided to go here...

As many of you know I have a 3 year old son that I take with me out into the bush hunting/fishing/prospecting all of the time or longest trip has been 9 days up in the Quesnel area this spring.

While I was in Canadian Tire a couple of days ago I saw a small Bear Archery bow and arrow set called First Shot it comes with 2 arrows and a small 8 - 12 lbs draw weight fiberglas bow marked down from $34.00 to $14.00 so after only about a second deliberation I grabbed one off the shelf and brought it home for my little guy.

When I first showed it to him he new instantly what it was and could hardly contain himself as I took it out of the packaging.

I set up a cardboard box in the back yard and started training my guy on how to hold the bow and release the arrow after about 1/2 hour he was still wanting to shoot it and he was even occasionally hitting the box which was only about 15' away.

He is already after me to get him out shooting it again today...

Guys if you have any young kids in your family this is a perfect little starter bow kit that I highly recommend you get for them...

That there is the trick, if it's fun they'll love it. Just remind them of how much fun it can be when things get slow.

My two are 14 and 11 now, can't leave home without at least one of them. I didn't start them out till they were each 8 or so.

Good on you Dad's for getting the started nice and young :wink:

Good job. From the arrow in the lawn it looks like it might have some pull to it. Keep your grass aerated!

I can poke an arrow thru both sides of the box (not thru the box the tip will stick out about 6" on the off side)...

Should be enough to stop a rabbit. Good luck to him.

That's pretty much what I did for my kids when they were that age. The only modification I made was have a new flemish string made for the bow. It improved performance (and looks) so much better. The new string allowed me to put some "no glove" noc point on the bow. That helped them always noc the arrow in the same place. Then one day I added some nice fur string silencers on it. (the kids start seeing their own bow looking just like Dad's. When they hit a certain height/age, I bought them a porcupine recurve (25lb). They've never looked back.

Nothing better than hanging in the backyard, talking safety and hunting with kids, making up stories, while they fling and fling and fling and are just totally entertained. I think that's why I'm still bowhunting. I'm easily entertained.

Just curious at what age did you get her into this larger bow and what is the draw weight?

she is 6 got it for her in may .... the draw is like 14 pounds or so .I think its about a 22 pound max .. the limbs are backed off as far as they will go ... lenth is a little long but there is little to no adjustment on them ... I am kinda bitter at that fact ... it does have a let off but she doesnt use it ... It would be ideal for say a 7 or 8 year old ... she is tall for her age ... she wanted a compound (like mine)

she normally has a PSE heritage recurve that is 20 pounds at 28" ... works out to like 14 at or so at her 15" draw

here is the specs page on it

Makes me wish that me 'n the missus could've had little 'uns. Super satisfying to be able to teach and watch your own kids explore, develop, and expand their interests and horizons.

Ahh well. I do it vicariously now.
