so i was wondering, how does a person determine if a buck is 4 points or more? is it based upon the number of tines on a single antler or on the combined antlers? how long do they have to be to count...etc?

cool thanx guys. I also noticed on the synopses that there is no requirement on white tail.... so this means as long as its male its good?

yep that is right. have you looked at the synopsis online?? goes through deer, elk and moose antler identification with pics. I always read the first 26 pages every year to remind myself of the rules and to see the changes then I check the regions I'm going to hunt

Any chance you started hunting down in the States? I know that when I first moved back to Canada, the whole '4 points on one antler' thing threw me off. Down there a '4 point buck' meant a total of 4 points.

I remember the shocked look on Canadian friend's faces when I talked about the '8 point buck' I took in Illinois.

no i have never hunted down there, but i have been looking at videos on utube of different bucks, some guys boasting of 10 pointers.... just wanted to clarify it

They do the double counting thing in Ontario too, but then it is Ontario so not much believable comes from there anyway...

When you do the CORE course it will help. But like Slowkey, said this sounds like a good idea for you if you have any doubts. It lays out how big a tine actually has to be to be considered a tine and explains specific information about all the species. Also, don't forget as it's been said about the brow tines Whitetail vs mulies......

I think that it is JUST BC that does not count the brow tine on a Mulie.

According to Boone & Crockett, the Brow tine counts as a scoreable point. so the "4 point" mulie in the picture previous would be scored as a 5 point.

This is according to a book called "Boone and Crockett Club Field Guide to Measuring and Judging Big Game" Second Edition.

Dutchie

As per the BC CORE DO NOT COUNT THE BROW TINE ON MULIES!

and don't forget the points only have to be an inch long minimum
