Helped my brother move this week as a result of the ever more popular divorce. He is really downsizing and I ended up with lots of goodies including this muley that my Dad shot locally in 1977 or 1978. My brother's wife decided to surprize him by getting this rack(which was on their barn) mounted for his birthday so he didn't have the heart to tell her that it he didn't shoot it. I don't really have the space for it but otherwise the new owners of the house were going to get it(they wanted it)....and I could not bare to let it leave the family.
After giving it a good cleaning I discovered it was "buggy" so it's now in a Raid-ladden garbage bag in my garage. I may just end up hacking off the antlers and put them in my garage.
It's an interesting character buck.

Yes, I agree...but I don't want to chance getting bugs in the house and into my other mounts. I'll keep him in the garage until I can get some professional advice.

New cape sometime in the future, worst case scenario. Nice character, nice memento

Why would you get rid of it if your dad shot it? its a nice rack, I wouldn't cut them off I'd just hang it in the shop.

No plans on getting rid of it. No room in garage for a shoulder mount.
If I can get the bugs under control I'll stick him downstairs.

Not sure if he'd go that high with only crab claws for front forks. Never put a tape on him.....and probably never will....but don't let that stop people from guessing:wink:.

Nice to keep something in your family...

If you have to, you could always remove the cape form the mount, get another cape and have it redone.

It might make a good outdoor addition if you have a covered porch, too.

Get Harley to get you some Protex Mount Care, give the mount a quick wash then rinse and spray with Mount care.
Do outside then let dry in the shop ( it stinks a bit ) and you should be good to go

Hot enough that there's nothing left to attract bears:wink:.

Thanks Ken! I'll do that. I've been looking for an excuse to head up there to leave some drool on those rams "the boyz" are waiting on. Now I have one:).

bugs should croak if you put it in the freezer for a week, then dust with powdered "Sevin"

If you can get it in the freezer for a while, then quarantine it somewhere and check for re-occurance. Should be good then. Otherwise buy or get a another cape somehwere and re-do. I have a Kaibob 2 pt from the grandpa on my dad's side that must be from the 30's. It's kind of cool to have something from your dad around after he's not.

SSS, get yerself a cape and have Harley do another masterpiece.

I had a wormy old mount of a great buck that my dad shot in 1957. I took it up to Harley along with a new cape from a late season muley I shot in region 5.

The results...awesome, as per usual with Harley!

That's a dandy buck, F/D!! Wicked fronts forks on him!

Pretty sure I won't be getting it re-mounted with a new cape. Wall space and finances are both drying up:rolleyes:.
Most of the hairloss in low on the brisket and is not very noticable. If I can keep the bugs under control I'll put it up downstairs.
