I am getting a longbow to play with soon and would like to build some arrows for it. It is going to be 63" long and around 50lb@28". So what spine for carbon arrows and what fletching works best or just go with feathers?....Ron

Hi Ron, it depends in part on the manufacture of the bow. If the riser provides for very near centre fire, then a nice stiff carbon will shoot fine out of the bow. If the riser commands that the arrow needs to flex around the riser, then you will have to pay closer attention to matching the arrow to the bow. Will you be watching the weight of the arrow relative to the bow? With a 55# bow, I would probably want my arrows weighing in around 500 - 550.

Regarding the fletching. Definitely feathers. The question is what size. And that will depend on the stability of the arrow in flight.

Gold Tip 3555's cut to 28 or 29 inches, fletched w/ 3" feathers....

It would be great if you could fly a 3" feather, but that might be a bit small. I mean, if the bow tunes well to the arrow, then great. I currently fly a 5" feather.

:-D Hey Bow Walker , As J-T says the less center shot the bow less spine is so mantitory . Carbon arrows are affected less by Archers Paradox but come into play with MPI difference with Instintive MPI .
Less paradox requires less feather length to stablize the arrow 3in is OK for field points and 4 to 5in fine for broadheads .

I'm using 3555's cut to 28" w/ 4" feathers (r.w.) and these fly way better than the overly-stiff 7595's cut at 29.5" that I was using.

My longbow has a bit of a shelf (about 1/2") and is 45 lbs @ 28"....except that I don't quite draw 28", given that I have to use a mechanical release (arthritis is a beetch).

What's MPI? Haven't run across that term before. But then, I'm pretty new to this stick-n-string "thing".....which is probably why I was shooting arrows that were way too stiff.

Thank you Awishanew (BTW) for the time you spent with me after that great dinner at the Nanaimo 2-day shoot. I'd like to spend some more "quality time" with you, me, our bows, and a few dozen arrows.

I'm practising that stance that you demonstrated. It seems to be helping me quite a bit.

:-D Hey Bow Walker , the Main Point of Impact your mind sees can be quite different than the MPI of the Bow and Arrow . When the spine and bow is properly tuned the two MPI's merge .
:-D Those who use wood arrows now and then find a "sweet" one in their quiver because of minor spine variances .

Ahhh, know it as P.O.I., or Point Of Impact. Thanks - now back to my whiney-assed brother's original question.

....and No, I'm not hi-jacking this thread. Not at all. Why do you ask? What makes you say that?

You might find Carbon Express, Heritage 150's will fly well. I use them outa a 56# chekmate crusader with 50 gr. brass inserts and 175 field tips 5 " feathers and they seem to work just fine. The arrows are 10 gr/inch and are near bomb proof. The odd miss into a rock often means a mushroomed field point that just need to be unscrewed and replaced then the arrows back in the quiver.

Got my longbow today! So I am going to try some 400 spine carbons with 125 gr tips at full length. Then I will start cutting them back 1\2 inch at a time till they fly good. This bow will be used for fun only as I am a compound guy, both for 3D and hunting. Pretty bow. Dress it up with some nice beaver puffs on the string and she'll look great.

You have to admit, the wood longbow IS a thing of craftsmanship and beauty. Everyone should have one. Just a ton of relaxation for back yard flingin.

Or those Friday night parties with friends. Instead of beer pong. The longbow is a unique addition to drinking games. (just kidding)
