This morning at about 5:15 driving west on Lougheed Highway, just outside of Mission I saw a bull elk, I had to turn around and look again, but sure enough there he was velvet well on its way.

I got some pictures but he is pretty small in the photos.

Does anyone know of Elk near or in the Mission area? I know there are elk around Squamish and heard there were some introduced in the Chilliwack area, but know nothing about East of the river in the Fraser Valley. Maybe he moved down from Squamish???

Or, maybe there is an elk farm near by?

-Interested to hear your comments

Theres no elk farm but there is a fallow deer farm in Mission. You should be able to tell the difference in size pretty easily though. Maybe I should go catch it and bring it home and tie it up on the farm haha.

He was just by the trout farm as you come out of Mission. In the field that used to be full of blackberries.

Wow thats good news. Glad the heard is doing well.

Does else anyone remember the story about 20 years ago of the bull Elk at the famers field in Popkum? [west of Hope].

The farmer had complained to the C/O that a bull Elk was trying to mate with his cows. The C/O didn't beleive him and then the farmer took a picture and sent it to the newspaper, with the comment that if the C/O service didn't come out to deal with it he'd shoot it.

Evidently trhe C/O was out first thing the next moring and tranquilized the
Elk and moved him.

I have been looking for the elk. No sign of him yet. One of the neighbors has had a bobcat chasing his house cat. He isn't happy about that. If I do see this elk I will have the camera ready.

I have been watching for him each morning I drive out but have only seen him that once. Something to look forward to each morning anyway.

I cannot confirm it, Someone told me it was hit by a car the other day on the Lougheed. I went and looked for blood or hair and couldn't find any. So I'm going to say it isn't true until I find out otherwise. I sent this and it is has been past on. Thanks for your patience and understanding. It has been very busy here. I forwarded your note to Darryl Reynolds who is the senior biologist in the lower mainland working out of Sechelt. Darryl is very familiar with those elk.

A couple of years ago I was driving by the PNE and saw a Ostrich casually walking around on Hastings. That was unexpected. (He got loose from an exhibit).

The Field just west of Nelson ST. Should be a big red barn close by. Looks like a four point.

Ive personally seen a cow elk way eagle ridge in coquitlam and have also seen pictures taken by GVRD security of a huge 6x7 bull elk, a mountain goat and a wolverine in the capilano watershed.

To date, Roosevelt elk have been released to the following areas in the Lower Mainland Region:

• McNab Creek (2001);

• Rainy River/Gray Creek (2001, 2003/2004);

• Skwawka River (2001/2002);

• Tzoonie River (2002/2003);

• Clowhom River (2003/2004);

• Stakawus Creek (2004/2005);

• Upper Pitt River (2005);

• Brittain River (2005);

• Indian River (2006);

• Vancouver River (2006);

• Upper Squamish River/Ashlu Creek (2007);

• Quatam River (2007/2008);

• Powell/Daniels River (2008);

• Olsen Creek (2008); and
• Stave River Watershed (2007/2008).

Future (2008/09 – 2011/12) release sites include Brem River, Toba River, Orford River, Southgate
River and Homathko River. Fulfillment of these objectives would complete the relocation
objectives of the LMRERP and the project’s goal of restoring Roosevelt elk to their historic ranges
in the Lower Mainland Region would be realized. The re-introduction of Roosevelt elk into the Stave River watershed occurred during three separate
releases: 2 in 2007 and 1 during the winter of 2008.

Just part of a survey taken in 2008 by bc hydro. Here is the full survey: http://www.bchydro.com/bcrp/projects/docs/bridge_river/07.W.SFN.02.pdf
