So im pretty novice to the game but im working my ass off doing some scouting in the back country this off season. Took this photo of a track today on a back country hike. Whats your opinions on species and size??? Can you tell from a track? Just curious what you guys think. Just for info purposes, this track was located in the Alpine at approx. 7500 feet.

Is that a folding knife beside the track? - how long? - It's hard to tell in the picture.

hard to tell from such a small picture but I would guess caribou, can you make the picture larger?

hard to see in the small pic, ungulate anyway. Probably caribou if you were out in monashee country or mulie that melted a lot

Im not a tracker by any means but is this a decent sized track??? It seemed a hell of alot larger than the others I saw today. I was thinking about throwing up a trail cam as the area was pounded with the same set of tracks. Ive heard of guys talking about picking out a shooter just by the tracks. Wondering if anyone with that kind of knowledge has an opinion on this one.

Ok, I see the glasses now, and I'd say mulie as well since the main hoof is just a little longer than one lense, may be a good sized animal or a melted track. If it's shark and crisp, rather that rounded out, it would be a good sized animal - or a good sized hoof anyway.

Ok, ...........If it's shark ..................

Oh come on now landphil, we all know that sharks don't leave tracks like that. The poster already admitted that he's kinda green on tracking...... be nice!!!

To me it looks like an aged mule deer track this track came from a small mule deer..

I'd say caribou.

Here's one from our grizz hunt iin April. Bigger but they do come in smaller sizes.

If there some rough steep rocky country nearby, I'd say mountain goat based on size and shape.

Mule deer buck, 3 day old track, 4 yr old deer, 3x4, 23 in spread, kicker off the right G2, slight limp on the driver side front, wintered well, scar above his left eye. Thats all I can tell for sure.

I'm staying with my first quess. I've hiked the monashees in the snow and saw far more caribou than deer, also, that picture looks similiar to "Stone Sheep Steve's posted picture.

If that was from a mule deer, the deer would be medium to small in size. I have seen mulie track twice that size come from a deer that was pretty decent but not huge.

But I'm thinking it is not even a mule as their track is more pointed at the front and larger in the rear and this one is rounded and semi-circular.

I'm guessing a (melted) caribou track. As the track has a more rounded formation then I would expect from a mule deer.. but again it is hard to say given the picture size, melting and length of time it has been there before you happened by... have fun exploring.
