View Full Version : Just "Good Times"

When I discovered that I was the only one in our "loose" group that was drawn for grizz I admit I was pretty excited but when I realized that a co-worker had already booked off the entire month of May my chance of taking off a couple of "Prime-time" weeks went out the door. I would just have to make a few long weekend get-aways to get it done. I've always dreamed of getting a nice mature boar but deep inside I didn't want it to happen too early as I wanted it to be the "pinnacle" of my hunting career. Really, who was I kidding??? Just being in the mountains in the spring with good company is what it's all about. If you haven't experienced a spring grizz hunt you're missing out on something special. Getting a bear is a complete bonus.

Round #1

We had heard that the snowmelt in that country was a solid 4 weeks ahead of the norm and with grizz hunting timing is critical. With four days off Easter weekend what better time for our first "scouting" trip? Forecast was looking a little cool as the time approached but time away from the families and in the mountains is always appreciated and you don't know until you go, right?? My ATV was still in the shop getting some repairs so we drug our bikes over in case we had some hard-packed snow to ride on but we really expected a serious workout with the boards strapped on...and a serious workout we got. Two middle-aged guys sitting around all winter chasing toddlers and sitting in the hockey rink aren't exactly the epitomy of fitness.

After a good 10 kms of hiking in we found winter had not released its grip on the mountains although we did manage to see some old tracks in the snow. It felt good to wake up our bodies and now we knew not to comeback for at least another 3 weeks.

Round #2

Three weeks later I was struggling to find a partner for my next long weekend outing when out of the blue the phone rang and it was Swampman asking what I was doing the coming week as he had the entire week booked off. I informed him about my grizz draw and he said he would call me right back. Phone rings again and he said he could help me out….but then I also informed him that my quad was still in the shop. That wasn’t a problem as Swampman told me he had a pair of 650’s and one just happened to be on tracks…excellent!! Game back on.

Unlike the previous trip the forecast was for way above average temps with highs in the upper 20’s C. After spending several hours rebuilding a large washout we were cruising towards our first set of slides. http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/Grizz_Hunt_2_2010_004.jpg (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=19141&ppuser=1509)http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/Grizz_Hunt_2_2010_006.jpg (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=19142&ppuser=1509)

Then the 3’-4’ wall of snow appeared. Not a problem as we hooked up a tow rope and drug the quad on wheels with my fat arse around like a toboggan. Those tracks are a must have for spring grizz hunting!
After another couple hour "delay"http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/Grizz_Hunt_2_2010_013.jpg (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=19144&ppuser=1509)http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/Grizz_Hunt_2_2010_017.jpg (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=19145&ppuser=1509)

we were finally ready to strap on the boards and sneak into the first set of slides. There was open ground and “some” green but not a lot: however, we did manage spot some activity going in and out of what appeared to a bear den just opposite the best slide.

We spent two full days in the area with no sightings and very little sign so we bailed for another drainage to check things out.

Our hunch was good as we spotted 5 grizz and two blacks (including one shooter) within a couple of hours. Too bad as we had to head for home early the next morning. I’m sure we could have found a shooter in a few days.

Round #3

Grabbing and extra day off on May long weekend, I picked up my quad from the shop and swung by to pick up Calvin and headed for the high country. Unfortunately, my quad was still pi$$ing oil like the Exxon Valdese. The shop had had my quad for over 70 days so I told them that it would be ready for the long weekend. They gave me a couple of extra liters of oil and told me to bring it back as soon as the weekend trip was over.
We arrived at camp by 11:30 pm and set up quickly in the dark and woke up the next morning to find someone’s calling card left in front of the truck.

http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/Grizz_Hunt_3_2010_055.jpg (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=19151&ppuser=1509)

The snow had virtually disappeared in the last few weeks so we hoped that the quad would not be necessary…which was a good thing as it probably spewed an entire liter just unloading it from the truck.
The first viewpoint revealed two single grizz and a couple small blacks, a couple of bull elk and a goat but nothing to get us excited. Deciding to change locations, we headed for a new drainage. Of course, since it was day one we were focused on grizz and left the bows behind at camp. Well, you guessed it…Calvin soon spotted a nice sized blackie feeding away without a care in the world. He was certainly worth a closer look. The wind was perfect and there was a little road that put us in the perfect spot just above the bear. Unfortunately, the wind started to shift about halfway through the stalk but we pressed on and were able to get within 50yrds of the bear. His noodle looked pretty nice but for some reason he looked a little “leggy” and I was able to talk Calvin into letting him walk. Onto grizz but not without lingering regrets.

http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/medium/Grizz_Hunt_3_2010_019_4_.JPG (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=19096&size=big&cat=500&ppuser=1509)

We carried onto to the next series of slides and were amazed at how little snow there was for that time of yr. After bumping into several more blackies (including a couple of decent bears), it left us asking ourselves why had we left the bows back at camp? Tomorrow we pack string!

The next morning started out the way the previous day had ended. As the coffee was brewing Calvin snuck out for a morning squirt when he immediately came back into the camper and informed me that there were two grizzlies right in front of the truck! I grabbed the video camera and we snuck out to see a sow and two teenage cubs roaming the streets. Hmmmmmmm….was it one of these bears that left their business card on our doorstep the previous day???

We scarfed down some breaky, did some shooting with the bows and then headed out to hike into the valley where we had seen the two single grizzlies the previous day in hopes that we might find a big boar hiding on one of the many slides that we could not glass from that side of the valley. Not having a quad made things a little tougher but we managed to do some shuttling with the TW.http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/Grizz_Hunt_3_2010_074.jpg (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=19161&ppuser=1509)
Despite the weather smiling upon us that valley ended up being a bust that day. Regardless, it was an awesome day just to be in the mountains....and, really, isn't that what it's all about??

http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/Grizz_Hunt_3_2010_068.jpg (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=19153&ppuser=1509)http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/Grizz_Hunt_3_2010_069.jpg (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=19154&ppuser=1509)

With the incredible snowmelt, Sunday found us venturing into a new drainage. In previous years, it has never even been an option to get that high up but with a little snowshoeing were found some new green amongst the slides. There wasn't a pile of green but enough to hold a bear's interest....if one was around.

After a some glassing, some lunch, followed by more glassing and zero sign of tracks or activity, we decided to bail and put in our time in one of the higher odd locations. Back to the truck and some lower elevation slides.
Glassing our way along, we spotted a few blackies but no good bears for Calvin's arrows. We had just parked our butts on the nicest slide when all of a sudden we heard some crashing in the alders below the trail. After making the instinctive move for our rifles, we soon realized that would not be necessary as it turned out to be 3 caribou....another pleasant surprize to add to our journey.

http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/medium/Grizz_Hunt_3_2010_033.jpg (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=19150&size=big&cat=500&ppuser=1509)

We inched our way further up the valley and Calvin soon spotted something to peak his interest. He managed to stalk within one yard of the beast as it was pre-occupied stuffing its face with fiddleheads. All of a sudden there was a scream as Calvin ran for his life! I wanted to run the other way but I could not leave my friend alone to face the enraged beast......so I charged ahead and ended up taking one for the team!

http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/Grizz_Hunt_3_2010_091.jpg (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=19156&ppuser=1509)http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/medium/Grizz_Hunt_3_2010_046_2_.JPG (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=19101&size=big&cat=500&ppuser=1509)

As the light started to fade, we made our way back down the valley hoping to bump into Mr. Grizz. Same old blacks but we also saw one that was in the perfect spot for a stalk with the bow. After several minutes Calvin managed to close the distance to a mere 4 yards....but it was Boo-Boo's lucky day as he wasn't on the menu.

We arrived back at camp just at dark to find a pleasant surprize as Boxhitch was able to sneak away after some prior weekend committments. Always good to see him.

The next day was our last so the pressure was mounting (okay, not really). We managed to spot a sow and two older cubs up on a high slide which we figure may have been the same group that paid us the visit in camp.
For the second half of the day we decided to return to the same slide where Calvin got his beauty boar three years earlier. As we got there we spotted three adult blackies near the edge of the slide which lead our hopes to drop. Where you find blackies, you "usually" don't find grizz. We watched them for a few minutes and they eventually disappeared into the trees. My hope for finding a nice grizz was slowly sinking away.

Just then we caught a glimpse of something brown walking out onto the same slide but from the other side. A quick look with the binos revealed a nicely colored grizzly. We dropped down below the trail and slid sideways to get a better view. After several minutes of only catching glimpses of the bear hidden in the tall mountain salad we finally got a good view of the bear but it wasn’t quite what I was looking for….despite the beautiful typical mountain grizzly hide. We managed to get some good video until the winds shifted and the bear blew out of there. Time was slipping away so we bailed back to pack up camp and head for home.

http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/Grizz_Hunt_3_2010_097.jpg (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=19157&ppuser=1509)

Once camp was packed up we put on our civilian clothes, jumped in the truck and called it a good trip despite the fact that no tags were cut. We drove down the road several miles when I spotted a nice sized chocolate feeding 150 yards away so we stopped to glass and get some video. The longer we looked at the bear the better we thought he was. Just then he looked towards the bush and out walked thee biggest blackie both of us had ever seen.
http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/medium/Grizz_Hunt_3_2010_050.JPG (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=19099&size=big&cat=500&ppuser=1509)

All of a sudden two more bears appeared in the meadow and all then there were bears running everywhere(except the big guy)!! Calvin then noticed another big boar cross the road 200 yards in front of the truck. Rutting action at its finest!! We both looked at each other and thought “This is crazy!” . We thought we should really go after at least two of those bears but time was against us. As it turned out I only managed to squeeze in 1 1/2 hours of sleep before getting up for work.

On the way home we were talking about looking forward to heading back next year hoping someone gets drawn….but then we realized that only that our wives need to “think” that someone has a draw:wink:.

Never been much of a bear hunter personally, but your story makes one rethink that position. Great way to extend one's season in the mountains.

Our MOE friends may benefit from knowing the location, sex and date that the Caribou were seen - personal choice for you to make though. Just don't tell them that you did not shoot a Grizzly in one of their "increased Grizzly tags to stimulate predator harvest areas".

The Grizzly, my arch nemisis. 6 tags and no boars big enough. yet it seems like every year I don't pull a tag I run into a whopper. Had the boys out last Saturady trying to get my oldest on a good blackie when out walks a cow and calf moose. She crosses the road and not 2 mins later a great dark chocalate grizz bird dogging her trail and me with no tag:evil:

You will connect and it will be big, I have Faith

Wade-That's the good thing about putting in for a draw away from home. No running into Mr Big that we can't shoot.
If no one get's drawn next yr and we head back for blackies, you know we'll see King Kong:?......but that's what cameras are for.

Awesome story SSS and great pics, I love that tent in the snow pics, reminds me of an elk hunt 3 years ago, caught on the wrong side of a mtn in a late sept snowstorm. And i have to agree, it is ALL about the good times! OS
