Yes, I was originally going to use 180 grain Barnes TSX bullets out of my .300WM but Srupp STRONGLY advised me to up the anti to 200 grain bullets. I concur Srupp, 200 grain out of a 300wm is the minimum you should go looking for a grizzly with.

Bella coola has always been the spot for huge grizz!
I know 2 people that have shot B&C grizz from there.
My wife had the draw a few years back, we never even saw any sign in 4 days of hunting hard! Lots of small blacks though!

Great effort and write-up pupper,

For you folks viewing the pictures online; the photos are definitely impressive but they can't fully convey the true size and sheer mass of pupper's bear!
Holding and lifting the head, paws, claws and muzzle gives entirely new perspective as to the size and power of these animals, somethign that people can't get from a photo and those who haven't seen/touched a big grizzly in person cannot imagine.

Cheers

Thanks again for all your help Ike, you and Srupp are some of the best folk a guy could ever meet.
In regards to conveying the true size of the bear, I think that is why a lifesize is in order.

great bear congrats did u say 300lbs head and hide or did that include some meat once again awsome

Just the hide and head were approximately that weight. I do a lot of weightlifting and that is what I felt my pack weighed(comparatively to having a barbell on my shoulders for squats) when it was on my back.

Trophy bear no doubt.

My buddy shot a 10' polar bear that didnt crowd 300lbs your bullets must have been in the hyde still and had rocks sticking to the fat.

Well its possible, I did not have a scale to weigh it but I am just telling you from my experience my pack was consistent with that of 300 lbs approx on my shoulders at the beginning of the hike, near the end it felt like 400 :).

Congratulations Pupper. Great hunt. Nice write up and good work on you web site. Nice to see someone from this site who has gone to such a high level in their hunting career.

Thanks for the compliment but there are a lot of hunters at a much "higher level" than me on this site alone. I just like to document my adventures. I owe most of my hunting success to the great hunters on this site who have generously provided tips and advice to me over the years. Without this site the cutting of the teeth would be much harder and longer.

srupp
08-19-2010, 07:15 PM
CONGRADULATIONS Justin...good on ya ..book bear....the Kudus are well deserved..you did PERFECT..let me explain a bit please.

This bear did not grow this size in this small valley by being dumb, or unwise to the ways of men..indeed this bear has had many years and many many many encounters with man..due to the location this bear has most definatley been hunted every day that he was out of his short hibernation..not just LEH season...

he has encountered and won every interaction with man and hunters his entire life until Justin...

this bears senses of smell, and hearing and contrary to myth bear do see movement..any movement very well, that and the fickle coastal wind and the bear knowing every inch of HIS living space puts all the cards on the bears side..

consider all the bear hunters that have come before.. the experience and the tools they use to go after these magnificant animals..each time the bear gets smarter...

Also bears have an inate ability to just "sense" when something is wrong..its not that the gweep stop chirping or birds take flight..no sound, no smell they just sense it....a very very worthy opponent...top of the food chain..literally...this bear is a tremendous specimen..and Justin is rightfully proud of his acomplishment..he faced this monarch in the bruins habitat and won...

Also should be noted the individuals that acompanied Justin it is one thing to have the tag to go after sucha formidable oponent but to go along to assist and back up to enable justin to be successful ...selflessness....

After 30 plus years of going out after these wonderful animals, guiding and seeing so many world records some harvested others just observed..I am indeed pleased with Justins organization, determaination and of course success...and to be lifesized is a fitting tribute to the bear...

WELL DONE JUSTIN, congradulations.

cheers
