Well thanks to the advice from members of this site after two years of hunting I have finally harvested a big game animal. Three years ago a friend from work showed me pictures of his hunting expeditions and well in short it looked like something I would enjoy. I found this site and then received advice on how to get my PAL and CORE. No one in my family is into hunting (they actually don’t support it) so this site really helped me out on the do's and don’ts.

Without luck for the first two years I tried to hunt deer, moose and bear. However, that all changed last weekend. My friend (also a rookie hunter) and I went to out to region three. We had stalked a smaller bear and had him within 150 yards, however my friend missed the shot and the bear ran off. Then on our last day on the hunt we ventured behind a small lake and I saw the bear running up the hill. It all happened so fast I grabbed my 300 and scoped him for about three seconds, it turned and I let er go. I hit it right in the shoulder and the bear started falling down the mountain.

High fives from my friend and we approached the bear, it was still somewhat alive and we finished it quickly with a head shot. I measured him out from tail to nose and he was just under six feet!

For all of you that said the "shooting part was the easy part, once you kill the animal the work begins," you should have stressed that more. It took us about five hours to move the bear, gut it and skin it. I took the meat to a butcher in Langley and the hide to Ray's Taxidermy. I am getting a head mount and having the rest of the hide tanned.

Should start a tradition where the rookie has to buy E V E R Y O N E on this site a cold beer!!I love this story because it shows that people are still interested in hunting and are willing to do what it takes to get out there. There was no "dad" teaching the kids and passing it on down.Great job.Now we all know how good of a packer you are, you'll probably get some invites hunting!

Congrats! Often that first shot is effected by "buck fever" as your friend might have found out. Obviously you were able to keep your cool and make a good shot, great stuff. The more animals you process (gut and skin), the more you will learn on the best ways to do it. If you can find information, the more you learn the better.

Good Job on the Bear, congratulations !:-D

You must have a real steady hand to squeeze off a moving shot where he only gave you a broadside view for a moment.

The first Blackie is always one to remember, and the memory will stay for a long time.

Maybe you want to get a second tag and get his big big brother ?

I'd bet good money you are hooked now !

Congratulations on your first critter. I'm glad you picked up on the ethics part of the game and utilized everything but the guts. Sign of a good hunter/sport every time.

A big congrats on your first . I guess we should also have told you that bears are the hardest to deal with . There is just nothing to hold on to. Even with all the work (and yes all animals are work when on the ground ) I bet you are still grinning ear to ear .

If you stop to think about it, you're still a hunter. Once the animal is down you are a packer. The hunt is over and the work starts.
Enjoy the hunt and the kills will take care of themselves when the opportunity presents.

Though this is true, I don't feel like a hunter till I've actually hunted and killed something. Till then, I'm a student of the lifestyle. :D

AAAAAAAhhhh Yotapup,
You are in correct. You are a successful hunter But yet an unsuccessful killer. you can be a successful hunter without killing:-D

Killed quite a few critters in my lifetime and have come to the conclusion that when I stop being a student of the lifestyle I'll have to go back to step one and learn how to hunt again. The fun is in the journey. That's just my opinion of course.
