I first spotted my bear on the main forest service road,as i drove around the bend,at about 500 yards!
I stopped the truck and glassed the bear,he was a good bear!
unfortunately he looked up and ran for cover before I could make a plan!
I know my area quite well and there is a trail that runs paralell with the road.
so i started walking down it ,after a mile or so sure enough there he was!
about 1/4 mile further down!
the gravel trail i was on was pretty noisy so i removed my footwear, and closed the distance to 200 yards!
I layed down against a log on the side of the trail and raised my 7mm.08
he was facing me,when i noticed his huge ears, which surprised me for a big bear.
I waited for him to turn and he offered me a quartering away shot!
I sent the 140gr nosler partition on its way!
The impact knocked him of his feet but he got back up and bolted into the thick timber!
he ran through about 100 yards of bl0w down before colapsing!
I was stoked!!
I was alone so could not take any field pictures {plus no camera}
and no tape measure but i have a 6' arm span and i could not reach from nose to tail.
I skinned him and butchered him and made my way home!
the next day I rolled the skin out for some pictures and did some measuring!
he measured 6'10" from nose to tail and exactly 6'10" from front claws to front claws!
PICS TO FOLLOW!!

That's a beauty! And a prime example of using more than just the size of the ears to judge. Well done and congrats!

yeah his ears were huge!

his snout was really long as well, and he had a long neck like a polar bear, not much fat on him after the winter.
his pelt was in prime condition, with no rubs and thick,
he left no blood trail until he colapsed ,amazing how bears dont bleed for a long time after there shot.

This is why there are Bud cans left along FSR's. It is easy to compare anythings size to a Bud can.

Nice bear Roebuck! Did the 'Prince Charles' effect make you 2nd guess his size?

it did for a second!!

but id been watching him for a while and was sure he was a good bear, I did not notice the ears until i was aiming at him!
at 200 yards!!
when he turned there was no doubt!
