Like many on here, this will be my first time actually targeting spring bears, and I have difficulty judging them on there age/size. I took a video of this guy in Quesnel yesterday, snuck up within 30-40 yards and watched him for 5 minutes before he realized I was there. He had a beautiful coat on him, they sure look nicer in the spring then fall.

So small medium or large bear? :-D

Heres the Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-L3LnYNEJSQ

he is a good size,, not overly huge or anything, if your looking for a big bear its good you passed on him, probably in the 4 yr old range.
ears are still close together and look very large.
if your after a trophy , you will know it when you see it,,the head looks like a pumpkin with smallish looking ears spaced far apart.

I would say nothing to big. You have to remember that its hair is 4-5 inches long so that will add to its size. Its ears also looked pretty big to me indicating a younger bear. Also the bear looked around a few times making sure it was not on someone else food source, another sign that its affraid of the other bears in the area. The big boys will no look up once to see whats going on around them as they are not usually affraid of too much.

Next time try to film yourself beside the Bear, it will make it easier to size. Having a Beer can in your hand will also help.

medium size.

Nice bear though. With two tags in my pocket I probably would have zipped that one with the PSE for peperoni and sausgae and then looked for a bigger one...

I would take that as my first bear. Im still looking for my first. Also i cant afford a rug on a big bear so if anyone comes over and i have a 5' bear on the wall don't laugh until you leave my house. I'll be proud of that small bear thanks. Not to mention the good eats. !!

Good observation. Always a good indicator. I'd say medium to small. Way to early in the season to poke that one, keep looking.

The EARS man! It's all about the EARS. Ya gotta be careful about how their ears look!
P.S. He's got nice ears and a beauty of a coat. Belly close to the ground. Did you see a lot nicer bears? With better shaped ears? This one is OK unless you want a wally. There are thousands of black bears. Why not sample this one, and after you're through skinning, cleaning and then, later on,eating your pepperoni, you can decide if he/she had great ears or not.

I would say shoot it. You got 2 tags. Then you will know a monster for sure next time. The way he runs says medium bear, but I would put him near 6 foot mark. Just get the hide tanned as it is beautiful. Dont have to do a rug. I would definitley cock an arrow for that one.
