I bought a canvas tent made by Woodwards a few years ago. I figured I was missing some poles and I hadn't really needed it so it's been sitting in one of my sheds. We decided to do some spring cleaning and empty out the shed, build some new shelves, so I took the opportunity to sorta set it up to see what I needed to complete it. I just tied the guy lines to tires and propped up the inside with 2x4s for now.

Anyway, anybody have any insight into what I need? Looks like I need a coupel of poles to hold the peaks up (where the 2x4' are now) and there is a sleeve for a ridge pole, too. No idea how to attach it, though...

don't use pvc, not strong enough, i made my owne frame by using elec, tubing, and works great, just have to weld some bigger size together for the corrners and fit the tubing into,, your tent looks ok,,be ready for hunting,,,good luck,/

Gate I used a old costco/crappytire intant garage pipes to make a frame for my tent. Lots of wrecked ones around. I just have to cut the off a little shorter.

That's a good idea you can always throw a tarp right over the whole frame work too.

Yup! I have a canvas tarp that will cover it. Still working on some heat though.

I have a woodwards tent, somewhat different from yours but that doesn't matter. Great tent and I love the the canvas smell on a warm day -- verrrry nostalgic.

The ridge pole is telescoping galvanized pipe (different diameters so one can slide inside the other to permit adjustable length and also so easier to store). The ridge is held up by two vertical pipes (one each end), also telescoping. The top of each vertical has a pointy metal end plug that fits inside the pipe and protrudes from the pipe end. That point goes through a hole that has been drilled into the ridge pipe.

The poles holding up the edges of the tent are are the same -- telescoping with a pointy metal cone at the top that goes the the grommets in the canvas. FYI, I use mine in the summer months at my cabin -- sits on a tent platform with a tarp over the top, suspended on a 2x6 ridge.

The telescoping of all the pipes is locked by way of a wing screw that is drilled and tapped into the larger diameter pipe and is screwed in until it compresses on the inner/smaller pipe and locks things in place.

The bottoms of the pipes have a plastic cap on them to keep out dirt etc. You could improvise.

The ridge pole slips into the sleeve that I see running the length of your tent. All the poles are on the outside of the tent.

You could use (say) 1" diameter galvanized pipe for the ridge and 3/4" pipe for the poles that hold up the ridge pipe. You could use 1/2" or 3/4" diameter pipe for any short poles around the edge (or wood dowel for the poles, cut to length with a nail or something on top to go through the grommet). If you want the poles to telescope then use two pieces of pipe of different diameter and a wing nut or similar.

You will have to poke around a hardware store and figure out something that will deal give you pointy ends on the pipes where it goes through gromments, and/or something to allow verticals to hold up the ridge poles. If you know what you are trying to do, you can usually find something that will fill the bill.

Don't know if this makes sense. I can send you a pic if you pm me, but it doesn't show the details very clearly. However, might give you a better idea.

Canadian Tire sells telescoping poles used for rigging tarps. Buy one for each corner and two more to support the ridge pole. Drill a hole in each end of the ridge pole to accept the thin end of the telescoping pole.
Even a peeled, dried pine sapling will make a satisfactory ridge pole and all the corner poles to, if cut to the right length.

Wood and canvass go well together. Plus it's cheap and "pioneer-ish."

Guy the poles to sturdy stakes.

You guys do know they still make tents right ? They even come with poles and eveything. They are lighter, stronger and set up in seconds ....and more weather resistant ... But hey, if you like musty damp leaky saggy tents with guide lines running in every direction ..... give err

I have some of the telescoping poles ith pointy ends for the rear of the tent, I guess I will have to make some for the rest. Your description makes sense, I think!:-D
