I just moved into a new place and realize I have a view of the hills where I like to hunt in the fall. I would like to try and glass these areas from my living room but it's pretty far away, Google Earth says its about 11km away.

Has anyone ever tried glassing an area from this distance or longer???

A quick calculation 11000m/200m=55x... or in other words in order to make 11km away look like 200m I would need 55x power scope of some kind...any ideas?

dont think I have ever sucessfully glassed that far, but close. I do regularly glass at half that. Buy a great big expensive scope and I bet you could do it, paticularly if there is snow on the ground

telescope is what your looking for. One that can view the stars, or big bucks on the hill. Look for 1 second hand.

Since you're in Kelowna and want to do some "long distance glassing" I have a cousin in Glenmore who is pretty as they come and her bedroom is on the northeast corner of the house. Happy hunting.

They say you can take the Boy out of Surrey but not the Surrey out of the boy:-?

Does she gut fish? Will she eat rutted mule deer steaks? And, most importantly, is she a Surrey Girl?

While that distance certainly is a ssstttrrrreeeeeeeeeeettttccccchhhhhhh, given the right species and terrain, you could spot game... for sure.

My buddy spotted a group of 10 stone rams that were feeding on a grassy slope 6.8 kms away...with his 10x binoculars.
Now, spotting game at that distance is one thing but judging them at that distance is quite another.

I know that glassing from my living room is not exactly "being there" but it could still be helpful to gain knowledge of the area, especially when I don't have time to make the drive an hour up and an hour back...
Thanks for all replies... even Surrey Boy:wink:
I will keep my eyes open for a used telescope in the 50-100x range

No, but they can usually take a pill that will cure most of the problems that are aquired related to surreyism

i dunno i aint no scientifico but i'd think that heat/cold waves would be the first issue. then the atmospheric pressure aka moisture would greatly hamper such an attempt. i have spotted over 3 mi but couldn't tell exactly wat caliber animal i was looking at. if there is some teck on this i would be right behind u for a test run.. the telescope thing might work but the vapor and waves should mess it up.. pls let us know how u make out.

Get a Zeiss spotting scope. Gonna cost you a pretty penny though.
