Hello all..

Any advice on a small to medium sized dog breed that would make a good companion while hunting or fishing in the woods. Bear detection and protection are important traits. Being quiet while hunting would also be good and the ability to track would be a bonus... Is there a breed that will met all of these criteria?

Best regards

Mike

Dont know how small your looking for but I got one of these dogs 4 months ago and I am really impressed http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rat_Terrier Looks like a jack russell but it has a off switch, very easy to train (house trained in 3 days) also I have been training it to blood track and she is doing very well. She will be going up north with me next week when I start my guide season. Because I have a condo I couldnt get the big dog that i wanted but she has definatley redeemed small breeds in my book. She is very protective but only rarely barks. Will she kill a charging bear? no but I bet she will try and that will give me time to do it. Mine will get to 16-20 lbs but they have decker rat terriers which get over 50lbs if thats what you want

Best dog for bears would be the karelian bear dog. Name speaks for itself. Just research the breed see what you think.

Fad dog that granolas seem to think are the worlds answer to bear problems .

The best dog to distract a bear and give you enough time to escape would be a weiner dog for obvious reasons
