Hello all...

Any thoughts, based on field observations, about the current status of the grouse populations in various locals within regions 6 and 7.

Thanks

I had a discussion last year with a MOE biologist and he said it mainly depended on how dry the spring is . As it`s not good for a wet spring as it is not good for the eggs. Last year was a dry year and one of the best grouse years that I have seen. I am sure that the predator population is also a factor in each area.

most parts of 7B that I spent time in last summer and fall had good numbers of Ruffed, Spruce and Sharp-tail grouse, and lots of Ptarmigan :)

Lots of grouse around Fort St James last year. We didn't get our normal snow this past winter, so depending on the amount of rain we get of course, could be another good year.

saw quite a few grouse last fall, but you're right there certainly were a lot of ptarmigan around this year in the high country.

The grouse population is spring weather dependant. If it's warm there is lots for the chicks to eat and survival rate is high. That year was great for the grouse. I have seen alot this spring already. So if we have another warm dry spring the numbers will be greater than last fall. We shot over 100 last fall between the girlfriend and I. I'm in Smithers, Region 6
