I love dogs. Im not interested in shooting them or harming them in ANY way, that is not what Im seeking with this post. My little unfixed black lab is 7 months old and will be going into heat soon enough. There are two dogs that live next to us who have got in the habit of jumping the fence and coming over to "play" ,one of the dogs is a little mixed breed pup maybe 5-6 months old, but he still has his nuts and Im worried he's going to end up pokin my puppy. There is about 600' of property line the sides up against one another and it is fenced with barb wire but obviously a dog can just go through it.

How can I protect my labs cherry, I dont want her bred this year and Im afraid shes gonna get it. I know how Id protect my daughters, but what about my dog?

Maybe I should go talk to the owners, but I know my dog has gone over to their house too. Should I offer to pay to have him fixed or even half of the cost? Im sure that some other stud will come around when she starts calling. The only other thing I can think of is building an outdoor pen. I do have about 250' of 6' page wire I could build a cage with, I just hate the idea of her been penned up, thats why I moved out to the country so I could have a dog.

I was so mad the other day when I saw that little ******* from next door running through my yard with my Muck boot in his mouth, if my gun hadnt been locked up I swear I wouldve casterated him right there.

But I want to come up with a non-lethal solution as I dont think its his fault.

Do her a favour and lock her up for the time she is in heat. If not the neighbors dog or another one will find her. If you must let her out make sure you are with her.
You don't want her bred at such a young age.
If the worst happens I think you can get a morning after shot at the vet.
If you are going to insist on keeping her intact and not getting her spayed then it is your resposibility to look after her. prepare for about 2-3 weeks of watching her like a hawk and chasing love struck males from your doorstep.
This will repeat at 6 months intervals if you don't get her fixed. Building her a safe, no climb no dig out kennel is a good way to go, that way she can go outside but will be prevented from any romantic interludes.

i've heard of dog diapers you can put on so if they get jumped no chance of love'n for the male dog or chicken wire the fence higher it's cheap.

Here's another thought. You don't want your baby having babies but you are 1. not getting her spayed, 2. letting her run willy nilly cause you bought property for that reason.
I had a friend who let her 2 dogs run because," oh my, it was cruel to lock them up in a kennel or heaven forbid tie them up".
Eventually they both became road pizza.
Please keep her safe.

huntinnewbie's advice doesn't get any better. It won't just be your neighbor's dog that's a problem but dogs with nuts for miles around.

If you want to keep her intact you will need to build a dog proof run for her. You can not ask your nobour to fix their dog, because you arent fixing yours. Not that i care if you dont fix your dog but fair is fair. Some people think that fixing a male will take its drive away. What ever.
The onus is on you to defend your bitches honor! Build a nice big run and keep it clean for her, its your only way out.

Yep,quarantine.Part of dog ownership and dealing with it.My little Cairn terrier is "banished" to the basement, and no un-supervised potty trips out in the yard by herself. My little girl wants to know if our dog can "get married" and have puppies!

Get you're dog fixed. Otherwise it will be a constant worry. She will still be happy and want to hunt.

check your bylaws where i live it is law that a dog in heat must be kept inside untill out of heat only alouod out to do its duty.and page fencing dose not stop them matting so be carfull.

thats a really weird one ,,you sure you got that right?

when we had property and the in-laws dog went in heat they made her doggy diapers,,looks hilarious but it worked. the diapers were left on while the dog was not in current view,, and then they came off so the dog could run and do her duty whenever we were around. I know you can buy those diapers now .. should maybe check into them or if you like i could send you the pictures( eventually) of what they look like.

Like every one has said, your dog your problem. Both of ours have been fixed plus they have a good big high run.My dogs don`t cruise the hood.
Now on another note.......What is the best ammo to use in a slingshot for all the owners who let their dogs shit all over my nice lawn?

Vancouver has the law that says the dog must be confined while in heat (4 . 7) and many places require you keep your bitch confined when it is in heat. also most club trials and shows that i know of have the in heat rules also.

I would be concerned about what you can prevent over who is responsible for what.
If dogs pass both ways its your problem IMO so I'd take steps to fix that.

A fence prevents a lot of other problems aside from doggy porn and if the property is that big (maybe too $ to fence) I'd have a nice kenneled run regardless.
Her first heat will likely be a false heat anyways.

There called "Bitch Britches."

Bitch Britches will NOT KEEP A BITCH FROM BEING BRED!! Thats like saying "My daughter wears panties... she won't get pregnant so she can walk around half naked at parties!:wink:

Good grief...they are DOGS. Male dogs will break through anything that is put in front of them to get to the girl. Chain link fence, under fence, over fence, through fence, and rip those panties off of her too....

Your dog, your resposibilty...spay your girl or keep an eagle eye on her.

Really??? Do you have experience of that backed up with progesterone test results??

Nope but I can think of a half dozen bitches off hand who had one real young around 6-7 months in the last couple years only to come in to a real one shortly after. He said he thinks shes coming in soon and that is MY experience at that young of an age.

Guess I could have used "often" instead of "likely" to keep you happy but I'm not trying to so I didnt.

My Rottweiler bitch got her Canadian Championship last Oct. and has been kept intact as she was to be bred. We have a high chain link fence with locked gates all around our yard as I dislike people coming to my home un-announced and un-invited, being the curmudgeon that I am.

So, while male dogs "might" be able to get to her, she is always with her companion, 2.5 yr. old, neutered, 120 lb. Cisco, her pb Rottie "boyfriend" and NO other dog will come close to him....end of problem and he likes small kids and old ladies, but, NOT strange males of any type!

I am going to have her spayed now though as I think all dogs not needed for breeding should be, it would mean fewer "put downs".

No worries about keeping me happy......I'm more worried that he is going to end up with a pregnant bitch from Mr. Fluffy over the fence. OP said " My little unfixed black lab is 7 months old and will be going into heat soon enough."

I wouldn't want him thinking "Oh, lets not worry about keeping her locked up because it is likely a "false heat" (what ever that is...or are you referring to a split heat? )...since it is her first time." Unless your progesterone testing you can't say a bitch has not ovulated during a season.

That, my friend, is Pregnancy Roulette and a game that man nor beast should play.

Me too.
Everything else after that is just conversation and personal experience, its what forums are for, to talk about things.
Asking if I tested progesterone is just challenging my reply.

Sorry for the hijack good luck with your pup Evolution.

Sorry if you read it that way ..that was not my intent.

I really wanted to know if science said that a bitches first season is likely to be "false" or a split heat and she doesn't ovulate.

I have NOT read that in any of my repo books.

So thought that maybe you have different repo books then I do or have the progesterone tests from those bitches in support of your statement.

Cheers,

So true. I had a dog run that shared a fence between two dogs. My bitch went into heat and the dog in the next run was a male. In the morning it looked as though a shark had attacked the chain link fence. It was streched all to hell and had a hole in it big enough for a dog to put his head through.

Thanks for the input.
How much will I know when she is going into heat?
She was born Aug 20, so I am assuming any time.

That comment right their is one of the biggest ( can`t use the right word) problems in rural area`s. People moving from cities and thinking their dogs can run loose. Loose dogs chase wildlife out of much needed winter feed. More neighbourhood fights are caused from dogs then any other thing . Look after your own dog.
