I am upgrading my flyfishing equipment..and am looking for a new sonar /fishfinder..it will mostly..99% be used for fresh water lakes and flyfishing..I just made a gift of my 5 year old EAGLE 480 unit..

so far I like the Cabelas Lowrance portable unit..either the Mark 5 x pro..which is black and white screen..or the same unit in Color..Lowrance Elite 5x...I like Lowrance products..

It will mostly be shallow stuff..ie 40 feet and under..but want a GREAT unit for picking out bottom structure..depth breaks and changes....

and it must be a "portable unit "...

Thanks for all and any imput..I appreciate the help.

I also like lowrance and eagle for that matter, you may want to look at the eagle fishmark 500c or the fisheasy 230c me thinks they would be great for the depths you need. Iv got an old garmin b&w witch is going to be upgraded to the lowrance elete 5x or the HDS 5x, I always fish in the chuck. What ever way you go make sure it has a hi pixel count for greater detail, and lots of power (watts). Lowrance and eagle are very user friendly also. there are some pretty good vids on you tube about lowrance too. or you can go sounder/gps combo unit and get a pre progammed sd card of the lakes you fish

I use a Humminbird Pirannha Max 160 portable and find it works great, use it on my 12 ' aluminum and ice fishing...

I think you can get them at Canuck Tire for under $200

I went with the Lowrance Mark 5x pro..with the portable cordura case..all from Cabelas..200 kz transducer..and got a couple extra batteries(sealed)

Went with the 16 greyscale as it uses far less power than color..unit comes with temp guide also..I usually upgrade every 3 years or so..gave my old unit away (to a friend)..
