I am looking for a grinder before bear hunting this year. I was hoping for some input on brand. I'm thinking between 150-250$ as in not a pro.
What do you Sausage guys use and where did you find them

hmmmm I also use the Cabelas model..however I use the 1 1/2 hp model..quiet..even under load..efficient..we cant keep up to it with one guy loading the hopper, second guy feeding its throat and third settling out the grindings...120 #s of burger done in 15 minutes.....

TIP.......When grinding meat keep it "just " a bit warmer than frozen cold cold meat grinds the best.

Stay AWAY from the 350 watt unit Canada Tire carries! It is literally a piece of crap!

http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/8/KitchenBath/2/Appliances/SpecialtyAppliances/PRD~0432331P/Hachoir%252B%2525E0%252Bviande%252BCuisinart%252BW aring%252BPro.jsp

The Missuz got me one of these for Christmas. Faced with an enormous backlog of sausage materials, I was one Happy Camper - Until we tried to use the damn thing! No less than FOUR failures in less than a week. First one the drive coupling failed within an hours use, second the same. Third the motor cooked - 2 hours of use, actually shooting sparks out of the fan covering! Fourth, the reduction gear failed completely - 1.5 hours of use. Thankfully CanTire does honor the Warrenty, the first 3 were replaced with the same unit, the final one we simply got our money back and looked elsewhere. This was NOT due to over-stressing the machine! We cut the meat into very small pieces (time consuming) and never forced any into the feeding tube. Just a POS IMHO.
Despite a couple of Emails to the Company, all I ever got back was: "Got a problem? Call our Service center". Not on my dime.

Had a few reservations about getting another from this same Company. But, faced with a pile of makings waiting to get sausaged, we could only find the next step up in size from the same Manufacturer here in town, and we needed something FAST! So, we took the chance and collected one of the 450 watt units: http://www.kitchenu.com/shop/product.aspx?ref=shopping&sku=610

1.5 Ponies, feeds so fast we had a tough time keeping up with it. Nice. Now has run through a couple hundred pounds of sausage and burger, and still going strong. This seems to be a MUCH better machine than the other, leaps and bounds better. And not so reflected in the price. We picked ours up well within your noted budget. It is something I would easily reccomend to the non-professional user.

Cheers & Good Luck with your decision!

Given the experiences with the first unit, I did ensure they too would honor the Warranty. Full Coverage. Thankfully no need!

We bought one from Costco a few years ago (I think it was a warning Pro) but a 450 watt motor or something. They were blowing them out for $99.00 from a regular $150.

You cant keep the hopper fed fast enough, it goes through it that fast. After doing 40 pounds of pork, the motor was not even warm.

Great unit the one we bought

I have the one Nog mentioned, bought from Costco about 8 years back. Done a ton of meat (a moose and deer a year), never had a problem and never skips a beat.

A suggestion is to also buy a stuffer, the stuffer on a grinder will become a PITA pretty quickly.

Stay away from anything under 450 watts, it just does not have the gits to do the job.

Cheers

Just bought the 450 watt Waring Pro online from Amazon.com for $163 USD. Pretty good deal I thought.

I bought the Waring Pro from Crappy tire and returned and exchanged it 3 times! I managed to grind up 1 blacktail, and the 3rd unit failed as I was finishing the last few cubes. Piece of junk! Would not recommend it to anyone.

I bought a US Berkel used. Cant stop them but they weigh about 120lbs. According to the spec it can do 1500lbs an hour. If only the island deer were that size i would be able to warm it up before clean uo

Check Cabella's. I have a buddy with one and the thing is amazing.
We tease him about grinding bones and 2x4's into the jerky.
Parts are easy to get as well and its all stainless and all warantied.
