I kept mine even with the highest point on the bars (brake resivoir) to keep it the same clearance and not getting frustrated trying to get under something.... (why the f*** did I build that so F***ng high!!)
The box on my Quad is 16d x 36w x 13h, welded aluminum and will hold alot of equip.

Dont think ya want the sides to high. Poor dog will whack his chin all the time and not like it to much. Just make sure you put some carpet on it so he has some traction.

13 high did you leave a head hole?

do you guys have a solid box or does it have no top? Like a milk crate just for them to sit in?

Oh sorry, I was thinking equip box not dog box.. As for a dog box I havn't built one yet, but when I do... Probably open on top, about 20" high with solid bottom and sides and will detatch from the quad rack by pins for quick removal..:-D

22-24"W x 24-26" tall x 2" (44" for me) less than the width of your quad plasitics (not the tires, this is so when you go tight around trees the corners of the box dont get caught) for a maximum size box. Welded aluminum box with four 4" holes on one side (long side) and two on the other side for air. I can get 4 dogs (cram 5) in when needed.
If you know you wont be hauling more than that one dog (I'd still make it big enough for 2) then you can go considerably smaller.
It should be fully enclosed, should you roll and the dogs head is out, its likely a dead dog.
The more room the dog has the more its going to bounce around and trust me, they get bounced around pretty good.

I made a point of taking a pic today. Maybe it helps. I usually run 2 ratchet straps but I lost one on the drive in
I'm getting an L-bracket frame made to stay on permanently for the box to fit in to so doesnt slide back and forth as much (not bad now but can be better)
It will be easier/quicker to put on and off with welded tabs on each side of the frame to accept the ratchet hooks.

Yeah... but when you're putting on a couple thousand kms a year with them on the back, sh!t happens and if I roll they'll survive.
