I'm interested to hear if anyone uses a rimfire rifle to hunt wild turkeys ( as allowed in BC). I've always used a shotgun choked up tight. Does the rifle give an advantage in range ? I worry if those little bullets are really enough to kill a turkey. What do you think ?

I would use my 17 hmr in a heart beat. I've alwYs used a shotgun just because that's how I thought it was done. This year i'll take 100 yard shot at em. Those little v max bullet will vaporize a turkeys head or neck

this was posted last year, about the rimfire for turkey's. Yes , i use a 22 and it works great, neck or head shots only though, i have not taken a shot in the body.

Shot a big tom in the body with a 22mag hollow point at about 140 meters. Worked quite well.

I've seen a 17hmr work quite well. I know of a guy who shot a Jake with a .22 in an area that was fairly steep. The bird took off and glided into the valley like they so often do and the hunter had no idea he had even hit the bird. Some other hunters found it some time later and saw that the hunter had actually made a good shot on the bird. I wasn't really a fan of hunting turkey with rimfire to begin with and now I never would. I find it a lot more fun calling birds in to 10 or 15 yards and peppering 'em with a 12 gauge with a full or extra full choke. It's quite the experience when you have Tom in full strut gobbling his head off right in front of you. I get a lot more satisfaction out of it than being able to pop a bird from 100+ yards. That's just how I feel personally though.

Ive used a 17hmr on 5 turkeys,4 shot thru the body none of them going more than 3-4 feet, one in the head.....its more exciteing with the 12 ga,but have only had the chance to shoot one with it.It depends on the area your hunting and how much time you have to hunt there,it sucks to see a big tom at 100yds and not be able to take him!!

I only use my 12ga. If your good enough you should be able to call them in to range with a little practice.

I agree. I'm flying home from Australia just for that hunt!
