Has anyone ever used predator calls such as fawn bawls or cottontail distress calls, etc, to call in black bears? Any info would be appreciated.

I had a sow charge down a hill at me once after blowing a fawn bawl.
She came quite a ways to get to where I was. She looked pretty pissed when she got to me and realized I wasn't what she was expecting.

They seem to come to them if they are in the mood. I've probably tried it 30 or so times and had 4 respond right away and probably 4-5 more come slowly and the rest look and ignore. I've never had one run away. I've tried all types of calls but the best to me is coyote pup cries/yips with fawn a close second.

I started doing this in the last couple years and it can be a lot of fun.

I've found that they sometimes lose interest if you don't keep steady on the call, but they'll come in fast whe you get one wound up. Best to set up where you have good visibility around you so you don't have any surprises.

I tried it a couple times, it can work. I also found if you laid off the call, they would stop coming. I think it's best in a spot/stalk situation when you spot the bear from a distance, close to a few hundred yards and then give em a toot

Be prepared to have to shoot one on occasion, whether it is what you're looking for or not. Pretty spooky feeling, when one figures out what you are and keeps coming anyway.

I highly recommend spotting and calling, over cold calling, but sometimes the bear you spot is not the one that you get coming into your call. Definately put visibility in your favour, before you start acting like distressed food......
