Warning: This is a poorly written novel.

First, I hear you have to have a joke in your first post so here it is:

Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He doesn't seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other guy whips out his phone and calls 911. He gasps, "My friend is dead! What can I do?". The operator says "Calm down. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead." There is a silence, then a shot is heard. Back on the phone, the guy says "OK, now what?"

I found that on Wikipedia a few months ago and I still find it funny.

Now, my season.

I have put in LEHs for 6 species for the last 18 years and only been drawn once for anything that was over 1:1 odds. This year was different. I got drawn for Moose, Bison and Elk!

By the end of August I had already been scouting 5 different places, my 30-06 was sighted in for 180gr Nosler Partitions, and my .243 was sighted for 80gr Nosler Partitions. I was able to get 8 snowshoe hairs while I was scouting the last weekend of August. They are a little tough but I love them on the BBQ!

On the 3rd of September I got laid off. I had mixed feelings, now I could hunt all I wanted... but I couldn't afford to go. Luckily EI decided to give me $320/week so I could hunt until I found a job.

The last week in September I had an amazing weekend, I saw 17 mule deer bucks in two days, most within 50 yards (only 2 were 4 points, but they were over 300 yards away).

The first of October I spent looking for any of the 17 bucks I had just seen the previous weekend without so much as a doe. Fortunately I found a spike Moose, it was a hard decision to make. I only had my .243 with me so I would have to be close and very sure of my shot. I stalked him for about 15 min until I was about 30 yards away and I leaned against the closest tree. My first shot hit the top of his heart, he took two steps and looked sick. My second shot went through his liver, and he didn't move or make a sound. My third shot went into his head just below and behind his ear, he stumbled and lay down. My final shot went between his antlers directly down. My very first moose, I couldn't believe how big it was. Then it sunk in, I am alone with a whole moose to pack out. (So much for my LEH) I got a good friend to help me drag him out whole! (we used a come along) I butcher all my own meat and figured I would let it hang for a few days.

The next day I headed out to see if I could find any of those mule deer. I found a 3 point following a group of does and put him down with a shot through his vitals. At least this one I could drag on my own.

The following day I headed south to the next region to see if I could find some white-tails (but not before buying another mule deer tag just in case). About 2 hours before sunset I found a nice spike mule deer and he has been tasty.

I spent the next 2 months hunting with friends and for white-tails but only cough a glimpse of a 4 point as his tail waved to me.

My Bison LEH was from December 15th to December 31st, and it was a hard decision not to go. I just couldn't afford it.

I was pretty excited for January Elk hunting. My LEH was valid for Cow/Calf in Creston area January 1st to January 31st. My plan was to get a Calf because I am pretty sure the Cows are pretty far along with their pregnancy in January. After hunting for a whole day without even seeing a track or any droppings I went to the local sporting goods store where the owner informed me that there had been over 140 LEHs over 4 months for the area I was hunting and they had been pushed really hard. I spent two more days searching before giving up.

Hope it wasn't too boring, I love hearing hunting stories if you have any to share.

Sounds like you had a good season. Lots of time afield is great and the meat is a bonus.
