Spot and stalk. The big 7 was chirping and whistling at me. It's been a lot of years since I heard that sound. Was quite thrilling. Brought back some great memories from my childhood calling elk in the Koots and the Okanagan. The cows were a little harder to get close to. Don't blame them as there were some big freakin wolf tracks all over that hill.

Elk are the last to drop. They normally start the end of March but can hold onto them all the way till the end of April.

Mark,
I haven't found any muley tine yet. Most are still packin'. With the warm conditions, I wouldn't be surprised if they hold onto them for several more weeks yet.

It's hard to enjoy the real beauty of photo's like that when's all you can think about when looking at them is shot placement, how much to have the head done and how much of a drag getting it out!!! Excellent photos tho!!!

Great pics Steve! Some interesting genetics with the antler configurations - which herd did those elk originally come from? Banff?

These are Region 3 elk. I've been fortunate to take pics of the biggest bull in the batchelor group for several years now. Here he is from Nov 07.

FD,
I don't believe these elk were ever from transplants. I could be wrong though. Several years ago the RMEF had a plan to transplant elk into the area to help the existing struggling herd but everything fell through at the last minute. The transplants were going to come from Jasper. They were penned and ready to go when the Ministry put the Kiabosh on the whole thing. The unofficially reasoning is that they thought it would just be a feeding program for the wolves. At the time it was believed the existing herd was about 30 animals. I saw 20 yesterday almost 10 years later. Interesting that I saw 6 bulls, all but the little spiker where 6 points or greater. IMO I saw only a small portion of what that herd really is. It really is a huge area and they range the whole works.
