Most ethical bowhunters limit their longest distance shots to somewhere in the 30 - 40 yard range. Even then it wil depend on many, many unknown and uncontrolable factors that don't show up until the exact moment of your decision to shoot.

I don't shoot at deer much past 90 yards. But a moose is such a big target that I'll stretch it out to 150. You should be able to hit them somewhere at that range. Use cheap mechanical broadheads, 'cause you will loose quite a few.

But seriously, what are you asking? Game animals, targets? What kind of equipment are you using? How much do you shoot?

The closer the better for sure .. thats what bowhunting is all about .... You stated that you are new ... I would start inside 20 and as you get more and more expirianced and comfortable that will range will increase

Just as BZ_M says. Good advice.

I've been bow hunting for quite a few years now, but I still limit (or at least I try very hard to) my shots to 30 yards. It's just too hard to make a clean kill any further out than that.

35 yards is as far as I would shoot prey. Don't use a range finder, guess it will make you a better hunter. Sorry wrong thread. 30-35 yards is the max IMHO.

Does this mean that you don't live in Canada? Hunting with a bow IS leagal here, so why go to the States?

15yds is my accepted maximum to be completely sure. But I shoot a stick.

However I practice/shoot 3D back to 50-55yds just for giggles, and on a good day I'm surprisingly good. But that in no way translates to shooting at game.

By all means move to Canada. Nothing like roughing it in the colonies!

40 yds is my max I try to get as close as possible, shot a BT at 10 yds this yr.

20 with the recurve, 30 - 35 with the compound. Too many chances to wound an animal beyond that point for me.
