hey boys and girls, i have been given an old (20+ yrs) Jennings compound bow model is "master hunter"

I'll post up a picture after supper for better id. but there is little to go on for there is only two labels, 1. JI = Jennings compound bows inc.
2. "master hunter"

round cams on both limbs, and secondary pully's inside the limbs, just under the cams. cable anchors are on pointed supports level with the limb bolts.

help that helps for a start!

I have a Martin Cougar home kit compound from 1985. We should start a classic compound club. LOL

I remember those back in the late '70s. Lot of engineering went into those:lol:. I think that type was made under the Allen patent, just before the patent expired.

Nice looking piece of history you got there.

 I'd put the bow into a press and take the cables/string off the wheels and cams. Then clean the valleys in the cams and wheels. Then inspect the bearings and axles of the cams and wheels. Then closely inspect the limbs, looking for any signs of hair-line cracks or de-lamination. Then inspect the string - and if it's OK - wax it liberally. Then check the cables (they look like wire) for any defects.

If all is OK - then re-assemble and go out to test fire it. You said a finger-shooter? How long is the axle-to-axle measurement from cam-to-cam? Don't want any finger pinch from a short A-2-A bow.

What's the draw weight?

If all else fails - it'd make a nice piece to hang on the wall. http://www.forumsextreme.com/images/sHa_thumb4.gif

Nice bow!. I recently got a call from my mother asking if I wanted the "toy" she confiscated from me back in 85/86? that had been taking up space in her storage. Had no idea what she was talking about lol on the bus it went, turns out it was a bow I had all but forgotten about. So heres a blast from the past as well.

if you look on the fourth and fifth pictures, to the right side of the master hunter label, you'll see it gets flat coloured along the edge, the epoxy finish has come off the limbs a little there, no splintering or cracking, just the finish has come off.
is that something to worry about?

i have a 60lb pull compound and this old bow will match that pull, though hard to say cause it dosen't have much for let off. and feels harder all the time during draw.

I'd say the "flat color is more due to wear marks (probably from storage) than limb de-lamination or cracking. If it were cracking, you'd notice the cracks and/or there might even be a sliver or two sticking up and catching on you fingers as you rub the spot lightly.

Check the plastic-coated metal cables for wear and/or tear. Wouldn't want them snapping on you during the draw cycle.

The reason that the bow feels like a really heavy draw weight is more from the tiny, round cams than anything else. Even my '96 Martin bow had a very small cam (although certainly larger than yours) when compared to my '06 cam on my Diamond Liberty.

The difference in feel while drawing both bows was night and day - even though they are the same draw weight. The Diamond feels like it is 15 lbs lighter than the Martin. Makes me think I should've got a 70 lb bow instead of the 60 lb that I did get.

While you may be able to actually shoot this bow, I really don't think that it will be comfortable and fun to shoot "all day". But as I said earlier, it will be a great decoration on the wall.

That bow only had a 30% let-off at best. I would certainly give the limbs a microscopic inspection for cracks, especially around the wheels and in the valley of the wheel slot. When I say microscopic, I mean with a high power magnifier, cracks can run longtitudinally in the valley area of the wheel slot.
