street legal? HA! i wish.. then i could get around the 10 am no atv laws... no it's covered under APV45 insurance, which pretty much denotes it as a utv. if i wanted to risk it i could put plates on it, since i do have the registration from when it was still a 97 tj.. but it won't pass the legalities of being at fault in case of an accident.

it gets trailered, much like a rhino would be, but i can get it wound out to somewhere in the 150kph range, and still take a cross ditch like it was a pothole.

This was half way through the buildup of the old rig. Wanted to go for a burn one day. Managed to blow 3 beads in one spot before on-board air was installed. Made for a bit of work.

Yes the dude we were on a road it was just burried with 5' of snow most of the way.

All I gotta say about this truck...for the owners this is.... I hope you leased it... If you bought it I feel sorry for you... well, will feel sorry for you, after your warranty is over.

8hrs at $100/h to RE&RE the cab...just to be able to work on the Motor...OUCH

If you want a NEW Ford... 2011 has changed substantially from the 6.4L to the 6.7L Scorpion... does not require the cab to be removed to work on the motor plus 750ft of torque.... but Im still not buying one.

The Toyota thing will be on the front lines for a little while. They still kick ass. At least they are dealing with it. Stopped production for heavens sake and sales. NONE of the questionable vehicles are leaving the lot's!!!

Look at Ford with the Firestone tire thing.

GM has jumped on the band wagon bashing thing instantly and are offering $1000 dollar rebate to Toyota customers if they switch brands:confused:.

I have had several Toyota's, and I think they are the best built trucks on the planet . Its just too bad they dont make a real fullsize :(

well, i bought teh truck at 305,000kms. the previous owner had it since new, and drove it to vancouver and back for work. pretty much highway only. i've put on 45,000kms with a solid mix of dirt roads, city and highway.

the previous owner went through 1 set of ball joints, 1 idler arm, and 1 clutch. he replaced the clutch with a pos korean thing.

i've gone through:

1 gead gasket
all 4 ball joints
both idler arms
pitman rod
clutch (wore out that korean crap in 10,000kms. put in a solid off road clutch)
right front axle (my fault)
right front hub (my fault)
2 sets of rear shocks
1 set of front shocks
2 sets of tires (because of alignment)
3 alignments (stupid thing won't stay straight)
lots of bulbs
1 set of headlights
2 batteries

and i'm sure i'm forgetting some stuff. i have the bills, i'm just not gonna dig 'em up. now it's starting to act up again. it gets a nasty rattle at around 2500rpm, and when it idles there's a puddle of water or something under the tailpipe.

it also gets shitty fuel economy for it's size, even before i put slightly larger tires on. it averages about 18mpg, city/highway combined. i have buddies who are driving full size gas and diesel trucks that do better than that. and it's it's super underpowered. plenty of low end, low speed torque, but that's it.

i bought the truck for $5500. i've put over $6000 in repairs into it. yeah, never again.

my dad's had nothing but issues with his hilux 4runner as well. he's on his second engine with that piece of crap.

i also have 2 friends who drive similar trucks to mine. they've also had nothing but headaches.

my next truck will most likely be a dodge dakota, since it will be in my price range once i sell this one. i'll baby it and once i save up some money, i'll pick up 2006 or 2007 dodge 2500 with the 5.9L Cummins and it will be highly modified with billet tranny, front end fixes etc etc.

well, i bought teh truck at 305,000kms. the previous owner had it since new, and drove it to vancouver and back for work. pretty much highway only. i've put on 45,000kms with a solid mix of dirt roads, city and highway.

the previous owner went through 1 set of ball joints, 1 idler arm, and 1 clutch. he replaced the clutch with a pos korean thing.

Sounds like somebody (you or your mechanic) isn't seeing the full picture. 2 sets of shocks in 45,000 kms??? And two sets of tires? Never check to see they're wearing unevenly? Doesn't make sense.

Either that or it was crashed and twisted to sh8t and nobody told you.

10,000 kms on a clutch is ridiculous even if it was a cheap jober.

I have had several Toyota's, and I think they are the best built trucks on the planet . Its just too bad they dont make a real fullsize Quote, Just how much bigger do you need Toyota Tundra or Nissan Titan????

Although my trucks these days don't see the mud bogs or do the rock climbs like some of their predecessors have, they still see more dirt, snow and mud than pavement. Thats why they are the colors they are. Plus I take care of them.

it's been inspected, and passed no problem. the vin number was run. no crashes, frame is fine. it's just a really shitty truck. the tires wearing unevenly was because of the alignment. for whatever reason, it won't stay straight. it was dogtracking slightly, thus the uneven wear. the front tires wore out way fast than the rear.

i'm guessing it was either built on a friday or a monday.

It's polished up pretty good in those pics but I assure you there ARE scratches on it.

I'll sum up the gas mileage by saying it "SUCKS", the 351 Windsor is a thirsty engine, I need almost a full tank from Surrey to Merritt but in town it's even worse than that, right now I'm paying $20 a day to go to work and back from Surrey to Vancouver, a commuter car is in the works very soon.

I started out with a humble 1988 Toyota Camry that I inherited from my grandmother after she bounced it off one too many highway dividers. When you have nothing, you use what you can. Made it to where I could bushwhack!

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t275/Dukeoflawnchair/Camry2.jpg

Once I smashed that into a Honda like the fist of an angry God, I upgraded to an XJ. Probably my favorite vehicle ever - many a weekend lost in 7-21 looking for grizz, etc.

I eventually sold the above TJ to pay for half of a wedding ring. I still miss it. A few years later, I bought a TJ. Great toy, but it was always having problems of some sort. The limited space really started to show when you had any more than 2 people, even with the hitch basket.

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t275/Dukeoflawnchair/IMG_0439.jpg

In the end, I started just using my highway truck instead. Jeep was bucketloads of fun, but after ferrying gear and game out on different trips puts a damper on a good hunt.

Last addition is this little bugger - 1984 Bombardier Iltis. The idea was to tow it with the Tundra on a trailer with a small camper on it. Very utilitarian setup.

Unfortunately, despite being a wonderful vehicle and my high expectations, I feel it's a little too pretty to abuse. It ony has 2500km on it, so it hasn't been beaten up by the Canadian Army or subsequent owners. I'll probably flip it and buy a Sami, a razor, or an argo...

Yes, they do look like a cool little rig. Is it a diesel? Any details on the type of failures?

northernguy
05-26-2015, 06:48 PM
Gas. Basically the same engine as the Volkswagen Scirocco. Failures were varied. Overheating was not uncommon. Major electrical problems. No excuse for that, given that there was no computer. Just poor quality in general.

Remember...they were built by the lowest bidder...and a Quebec one at that !

I understand that the German ones were better but they were soon replaced by the G-wagon...an older design.

My understanding wasn't that it was built by the lowest bidder, but built by Bombardier at $85 000 each in 1984/85 dollars...part of a government contract bail out + Quebecois relationship building effort. Direct award, not bidding :p. Unfortunately, it doesn't guarantee that the mentality was any better than lowest bidders.

Seems to be a number of electrical fixes (converting from 24 to 12v, fixing so that the battery isn't under a draw while its off, changing so that you don't need to use the same expensive spark plugs, etc) and I gather that the overheating cases were often due to three different circumstances - loading up of crap on the front bumper, doors being stored and laid over top of the hood, as well as the air intake (located unusually high and sealed for traversing deeper water).

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t275/Dukeoflawnchair/2015-05/F4FA9959-D92E-4750-AD6D-10612397D5E3_zpshserfnkt.jpg

The Volkswagen builds are generally more sought after due to the Bombardiers being ridden hard and put away wet by Canadian forces - seems like these were very often used to teach people how to drive stick.

My wee Blazer on 31's, my old S-10 following behind.
I bought the Blazer last year, very clean. I lifted it 3", has lsd rear, BFGs usually at 18psi, goes where I point it.
Rear seats fold flat, fits double mattress perfectly. Trailer has 12v/propane/water pump & shower, and hauls everything I need. Matching spare tire too.

Next S10 you see, take note of how narrow it is.

Since the pic I've replaced the rear springs and cranked the torsion bars. Clears another 2" in back, 1 up front.

Loaded like in the pic, mileage is disgusting. Run the tires at 15psi, in 4wd, watch the gauge move. The 4.3L is a decent motor but she's thirsty.

No atv other than my boots. ;)

The 4.3 is good until it starts having issues, i just got rid of a sonoma and after the water pump went it was one thing after another, i ended up buying new and being done with it, it didn't make sense to keep throwing cash at it and hoping it holds together.

I do it for a living, so... I don't have to pay shop supplies. ;)
My old Sonoma had 349,000km, running strong. The throw out bearing gave up and I decided not to fix it. I wanted a wagon, and a trailer.
Bought this with 228,000km. When it breaks, I'll fix it. I paid $1800 and plan on 5 years. Then I'll do it again. Maybe upgrade to an '05 Blazer. :)
