Does anyone use shepards for hunting cougar or bear?

Love the dog, great breed. Some are better nose dogs than others. Trainable, so should be able to go for the game. Not as instinctive as others I bet.

While I love my shepard, his instincts don't lend themselves terribly well to hunting it seems. We were out scouting an area up the skagit last year, just myself and my trusty sidekick, about 60 yds out to our right a smallish blackie came out from behind some scrub maple, I saw him right away, the dog had no idea he was there, bear was completely unaware of our presence. To be fair, there was almost no wind and what there was came from pretty much straight uphill. I called the dog over to a sit position then let out a yell, that bear took off like a shot, then onyx saw it and of coarse wanted to play chase. I made him stay then we were on our way
