Just interested in the majority opinion on weather you like the meat from caribou.

It's my favorite wild meat, although it's been too long since I've had a taste! :)

taken early in the seaon before the caribou is really good imo can't hang it too long tho as it is fine grained

Can't tell you - never tasted it. There are some around here, but no open season - endangered animal and headed for extinction no doubt. Probably due to caribou eaters. Lol.

Well, I'll eat just about anything and I like any type of wild meat, especially when it came out 10km on my back, but I still got meat in my freezer from over a year now, cant bring myself to finish it.

Might make good garlic sausage, if you add extra garlic! My Lab would enjoy it though I am sure!!

It's good early season, but after mating, pissing around, running the gauntlet, and generally being abused, it is nearly inedible, at least to me...so it's all about timing, just like everything else in life.

In my opinion it's the best meat out there if shot before september 1st. Its goes from the best meat to the worst in a matter of a week.

It's not my favorite wild meat, but its close... Taken in the early season Caribou is really tasty:-D. Being a fine grained meat, its easily digested. But tastes really shitty when there in rut!.

I have only taken one in early Sept. and it was great. My buddy that took me out hunts late in the Yukon and loves it, as well as his kids and wife.

Yep. Timing is everything.
We've taken 4 caribou all on Sept 18th and all were excellent. 10 days to two weeks later and you're taking your chances.

Barren Ground caribou is the best of any meat I have ever tasted, Mountain boo from the interior are pretty good when taken early in the season but go down hill fast once they start rutting hard..

I can't answer cuz as mentioned by others, it depends.

Aug to Sep 15 is generally really good meat. Its gets musky pretty quick after that.

January is also a GREAT time for shootin caribou for the pot. The season up the Dempster in YT was fantastic....some of the best meat I have ever eaten.

Yup excellent meat.My brother and I took a bull on Aug 26 once near the Yukon line and we loved the meat,Talked to some locals and they also said get em before the rut or you'll have a whole lot of dog food,if the dog will eat it!
