View Full Version : A Good Decade

As we start a new decade I can't help but to reflect on the past 10 yrs. I began hunting back around 1990... relatively late in life compared to most. For the first 10 yrs I fumbled around shooting a few little bucks and LEH does. I wanted to spend more effort on hunting but seemed to be stuck in a rutt with the same old partners.

The new millenia found me hunting with similarly passioned people and my (our)luck began to change. I consider myself very fortunate to have found people like BHB, Calvin L and BCRams (and others) that share the same passion for hunting. Success has been good but the memories have been great! Remember........you get out of it what you put into it.

For those newer guys who want to take on this great province I say "go for it" as time can slip away very quickly...a lot quicker that you can imagine. Make sure you don't look back with any regrets.

A photo journey throught the past decade.....and looking forward to the next 10 yrs.:)

I think my focus will definitely be shifting to getting my kids out more in the next 10 yrs. Really looking forward to that.
Good luck with that Dall! You'll definitely have earned it:wink:

The most important person that I forgot to thank is my wife. Our son was born in 1999 and I bought my first sheep tag 3 weeks after he was born. It was just a local hunt but that's where it all began. Without her support I would be still struggling to find that ellusive spike buck:).

There is one thing I should have done over my years of hunting and that is to have put time in hunting stone sheep and Dall's as for goats..

I hunted RME every year for the last 43 years and should have put time into hunts for the others.

Any of you young HBC hunters out there that is wanting to go out and hunt stone sheep ,Dall's or goat do it while you can you won't be disappointed with the outcome http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon7.gif..

That's some sound advice ,Wayne. I was given similar advice a decade ago by my buddy(the real Stone Sheep Steve). Chase the mtn critters while you're young as those flatlanders will be waiting for you when the mountains get too steep.
Thanks for the advice, Steve! I know you're lurking out there in the shadows.

Great post Brent!!!

Just goes to show everyone what a great place we have to hunt.

Thanks for the flashback and look forward to the next decade.

This has also got me thinking of putting on my own decade or two of picts.

We should all follow SSS's trail and post our own. I think we would be a much happier group of hunters if we all got to look at others successes and places we have been.

Sorry to steal you post Brent, but you have a great idea and we should follow it!!

Never get bored with looking at picts.

Cheers

Thanks for the post . As said before Hunting is the best sport in the world . I have been been very luck through hunting I have found friend I call family . (This has caused we to wish some family members were not ). I can alway could on any one of my friends all it takes is a phone call . . I have meet most of these people over the last 10 15 years . Yoou all know who you are . And I am very luck to call you family . I pray that my son will hunt as I was with a very good friend when his son got his first buck I have never seen a man heat swell so fast . Just plane cool to be there .

Calvin L.

I will help you thin out the boys when it comes to Jamie .

Thanks Calvin!
I (we) think of you as family as well:)...which is a good thing since the bank called today and said they are foreclosing on our mortgage. I guess I should have been paying some bills instead of hunting the past decade:?. We should be moved back out soon after the kids have graduated from college.
Don't worry ...... I told Jamie no more spear-fishing for Oscars in the tank:mrgreen:.

I'll be bringing the "R.V." over later today(ala cousin Eddie:wink:).

SS---No hijack....it's a Great idea!

Bring on those pics!

it never stops amazing me how people make it to places like that.
i only wish i could, not for a lack of drive but just ability.
i live in victoria married and morgaged, i cant even imagine taking the time off work let alone the gear required to do that.
im glad your kids will have the chance to see and hunt parts of our province that most never will, even if they want to.Keep it going so i can live vicariously through you!

The most that I've spent on one northern trip is probably $1300. Least is ~$800 ....and I live in the southern interior.
Gear doesn't have to be fancy. Just good enough to keep you warm and dry.

Married and mortgaged but No kids?
If you want it bad enough you should be able to do it. There are ways.
Get your employer (or are you self employed?) to take of more income tax. Doesn't take much. Squirrell away two yrs(or more) worth of tax returns and you could be in business.
I'm lucky that I get to work lots of OT in the fall to pay for my gear and trips....but at the same time I spend zero money day to day. I haven't been to a movie since the wife and I saw Titanic. I use a cheap motorbike to commute 9 months of the yr (can be freakin cold at times) to cut down on fuel bills, cut my own firewood to heat the house...... Lots of little things can be done if you want it badly enough.

Awesome post SSS! Thanks for sharing! Inspires me to push that extra bit and make things happen. As you've said if you want it enough you can make it happen. I love the look of those mountain top sheep hunts. Slowly working my way towards some of that, this just helps paint the picture a bit brighter! Best of luck to your next decade of adventures!

Great post SSS! Makes me think back on my own adventures over the last ten years. Amazing how time flys. My advice to you is to keep on doing what you are doing with your family and friends. These memories are what we get to look forward too when we are too old and we are sitting in the rocking chair. These are the stories we will be telling our childern, grandchildern and great grandchildern.

If we could get that pic of you two together, in the truck, on some front pages, the antis would be sunk!

That crooked camo hat and beautiful, honest smile would melt the toughest heart.

You have some awesome trophies there, but the best ones call you "Dad".

Great stuff SSS! Congrats on a great decade, best wishes for an even better next decade, and thanks for sharing!!

I have been reminiscing quite a bit of late, since its a new year, new decade and I just turned 40. Have come to the realization that I wasted way, wayyyyy too much of my 30's on work. I have very little to show for the decade, hunting-wise, other than four trips to Africa. Has made me quite upset actually! This decade will be much different. :)

I think she's going to be a great recruitment tool. She has so much passion when it comes to learning and is an absolute "sponge" when it comes to animal and hunting info...and she loves to share it when at school.
Just before x-mas her Grade two teacher was talking about Reindeer and their "horns"....well guess who put up her hand and corrected the teacher that they were not "horns" but in fact they are antlers???(and explained the difference:-D)
Her teacher took it well and raves about her as a student and a friend to her classmates.
Can you tell I'm proud??

Awesome photos and a good decade for sure! Here's hoping your next is equally as memorable, maybe even start it off with a white sheep to complete your slam .

After seeing these "decade" posts I came to realize that this past season was my tenth year hunting period! Might have to put together a photo montage of my first decade as a hunter as well!
